Questions about business

Ok - I'm not trying to get myself or anyone else kicked off the board. I'm not asking the name of your business or your web site. But I have some questions for those of you who own soap businesses or sell soap products. So if anyone cares to answer, that'd be great. You can even just e-mail me if you want to.

I have been reading all the FDA stuff and I wonder how many actually follow all the guidelines. When you put labels on your soap and other items do you include everything - like list of ingredients, warning hazards, business name and location, net wt., etc? I was also informed that I would have to have a health department inspection of the location where I make product IF I was going to sell it. Is that required in all states? What about product liability insurance? I realize it's the option of the maker/seller. Does anyone have it? I'm wondering if the insurance would end up costing more than you make.

Any info is appreciated.

I can tell you what I've been doing....
As far as labels:
If you are doing cold process soap you don't HAVE to label the ingredients, becasue that doesn't fall under the FDA guideline, however M&P does, so you are SUPPOSED to label M&P. A lot of hobby sellers don't, but if you sell wholesale you are supposed to label it with all the ingredients. I have labeled since the beginning, BUT with a basic label (As some of you who have gotten my soap know, my labels say something like: glycerin base, aloe vera, vit. E, color & fragrance) However I have gotten into more whol;esaling so I'm going to have to get a label made with the correct techinical ingredients.)
At this point I still haven't done the correct labels with the warnings, name & location, but will when i get someone to make the others.

I think the health dept thing varies state (or county) by state, may also depend on things like total sales volume etc.

From what the soapmakers guild told me, some home insurers will do liability ins, (but not here for me). The soapmakers guild does have some on their site, but you have to join to access that info. They did tell me that if you do get insursance it's not that expensive, BUT everything has to be labeled strictly along FDA guidelines, or the insurance is invalid.

I guess it sort of depends on if you want to be the next BBW or VS.....if you just want to do a few small craft shows you can probably get away with doing nothing like alot of people do, or do basics like I've been doing. You could also type up a list of ingredients & stick it in every bag....small print, but list ingredients for all products, & doesn't matter what they buy, everyone gets the insert.

I am doing MP. I thought about starting a web site, but not for ordering purposes. Just for information on what I'll have available. I think I can drum up enough business locally to keep me busy enough for what I have time for. And then do the local craft shows also. But I got very discouraged when I started finding all this stuff out. I already made labels with a list of ingredients. That's why I love WSSP, they have the lists available for you. I stick an ingredient label on the bottom of each wrapped bar. If it's a bar with pumice or other I include that ingredient also. I even went as far on the fish in a bag soap to include the warnings about soap not being edible and that small toys (the fish) can be a choking hazard, adult supervision required.

I did read in the FDA guidlines that you can stick a piece of paper in every order (like you suggested) with the ingredient list. I also read (geesh - I read too much) that if the business under which you make the soap is not listed in the local directory you have to provide a physical address. I'm thinking I'm just going to stick to the basics.

Gearing up for court next week. I would say nuf said, but if you haven't ever done this, it's customary to ask for financial records and every receipt you've incurred for oh say a decade. I've been carrying around a briefcase full of ten years worth of taxes, bank statements, cancelled check copies, letters... and answering the ridiculous questions they ask. Have you had anyone help you out financially [between the time he left and now]? Well yes of course I have!!! He hasn't paid me squat even though there's a court order for him to pay. And he's the one asking the question. What does he hope to accomplish with that one? Prove he's a deadbeat? Prove I'm resourceful? Prove I have a support system in place for our son?????? What an idiot. He's proven that in court three times now. Fourth time should be the charm. But it's almost over. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I liked being an owner and the intense joy that my incredibly loyal following enjoyed from my hard work. I had many people who just stopping by my garden center could revisit the feelings they had when they walked in their grandmothers garden. Some came as a form of therapy. Others came at night when I advertised in advance about the opening of the Night Blooming Cereus. Still others loved the fragrances, oh how I loved finding new and aromatic plants. Hummingbirds loved my place for they knew dozens and dozens of tasty plants awaited them in all sorts of colors not just red. For some I was the home greenhouse they wanted but could enjoy none the less. The joy I felt in treating the poorest customer just like I did the customer who (literally) was a millionaire and founder of a NYSE listed company. Being in the greenhouse in the quiet of January and feeling warm and seeing beauty all around me. Working harder than I knew I could work and feeling pride and fulfillment. Sharing moments of excitement with a customer who for the first time saw an American Goldfinch or Red Breasted Nuthatch at a feeder I sold them with the correct food to attract them. Being well known in a 6 parish area(county for those of you not from Louisiana) for the fantastic diversity and quality of the plants I sold. I had the pleasure of dining with the late J.C. Raulston of North Carolina. Knowing the late Dr. John Griffin of Louisiana Tech University, a man who made you feel like the most important person in the world,at least to him, every time you visited with him. It was about me but it was also about connecting with all kinds of people.I have been out of the business as an owner for 7 years and I miss the people the most.

Four Cups of flour (combination of All Purpose and Bread Flour) Teaspoon salt 6 whole eggs and two egg yolks or another whole egg Put the flour and salt in the food processor or mix by hand. Give the flour and salt a bit of a mix. Whisk the eggs and yolks fairly well in a cup and then pour into the food processor and mix and pulse until pretty together. If you don't have a food processor then you will have to pour the eggs into a well in the center of your flour mixture and gradually mix the two together until a damp clump forms. Then I dump the mixture out and shape into mounds or balls and stick into a plastic container and let set for at least 20 minutes, covered. If you can't roll them out after 20 minutes, refrigerate. Can be kept in the refrigerator at least overnite. You will have to take them out of the refrigerator if you decide to to it that way and let the dough warm up a little. Anyway, when ready to roll, if too sticky, just flour your surface a bit more and work it in. Make your mound of dough rather flat and then roll with a floured rolling pin. Roll as thin as you possibly can. Place that large flat, like for pie crust aside on a floured surface while you roll the rest of the dough. It is best not to have too big of mound of dough to roll out. Let the rounds dry, when they start getting dry on one side, lift and turn over. When that has dried some you can start cutting. I take a knife or you can use a pizza cutter and cut a bit bigger than a lasagna noodle in width, it is up to you really. Cut the strips as evenly as you can, stacking as you cut makes it easier. When one round is all cut and they are stacked, cut across and stack those. Now on a cutting board, take a knife and cut across the short ends in as narrow as you can cut and you will have noodles. Start laying out the noodles on the floured surfaces and continue cutting. After all are cut, spread the noodles about. I always let my noodles dry overnite, covered with clean dish towels or tablecloth. The next day uncover and check to see if they are really good and dry, stir around and let dry until they are really dry. At that point you can use them or bag them up in freezer bags and freeze. For my chicken and noodles, I like a rich chicken broth seasoned only with salt and pepper to taste. After your broth is very hot to the boiling point, watch it doesn't boil over, add the amount of noodles you need, let cook but not real fast uncovered until tender, probably 12 minutes, it may vary, you can taste and want them done, not chewy. Stir once in awhile so they won't stick. When they are done at that time you may add cooked chicken, no bones. Serve over buttered mashed potatoes. I hope I was able to guide you through this. Everyone will do what they are comfortable with but for me, I HAVE to label everything. There are so many people with allergies to all kinds of things and I for one don't want to be responsible for an allergic reaction because I didn't list my ingredients. If you've seen a severe allergic reaction resulting in shock, then you know the importance of ingredient labeling. JMO
