Crystal rock potpourri

New to site! Saw crystal rock potpourri at a couple craft shows for the first time and would like to try this. Can anyone tell me if they have tryed this and where I can get the supplies? Can I use ice cream salt, salt for water softners or do I have to order special rock salt? What do I use for color and how do I color? And what do I use for scents and how do I put it all together? HELP!!!!!

Here's a recipe from Barbara Milo Ohrbach's book, "The Scented Room", which I have made dozens of times. Men seem to like this as much as women. 5 oz lavender flowers 2 oz blue malva flowers 1 oz cornflowers (I often use larkspur) 3 oz whole cloves 1 oz cinnamon sticks, broken 1 oz cassia chips 1/2 oz powdered allspice 1/2 oz powdered cinnamon 1 oz powdered orrisroot 15 drops lavender oil She also has a recipe called, "Cherchez's Old English Rose Potpourri" which is my favorite. Thank you, Rosefolly, much appreciated. You are right it's the invasive lemon balm, ugly white flower. Verbena annuals are what my neighbor gave me every year. Verbena come in many bright colors, red, purple, pink, etc. - very tender to frost. What kind of roses do you grow? They have to be very fragrant while fresh to be able to have fragrance when they are dry. The best roses for fragrance when dried are the antique roses like damasks, centifolias, gallicas, albas, bourbons, mosses and portlands. (Visit GardenWeb's Antique Rose Forum to learn more about these roses.) The gallicas are very fragrant when dried, especially Rosa gallica officinalis (Apothecary's Rose) which actually is more fragrant dried than fresh. As far as color goes, all rose petals will lose and change their color when dried. They turn a more subtle hue, from black-red to flesh, from soft magenta to pink, from clove-brown to chamois. It is a lot of work to dry rose petals correctly. Ideally, you must harvest them in the morning, after they have first opened and the dew has evaporated. You then must gently pull the petals off and lay them singly on a drying screen, such as old window screens, where air can circulate all over and under them, out of direct sunlight. The amount of time it takes for the petals to become crispy-dry depends on how hot and humid your days are. But they must be crispy-dry like corn flakes or you'll risk molding. (You could dry them in a barely warm oven, but I would advise not to. It is easier and faster, but the roses will lose some of their fragrance from heating of their oils.) After completely dried, store them in tightly sealed glass jars in a dark place out of the sun or light. Properly dried and stored rose petals will retain their fragrance for a long time if not exposed to air. If you want to preserve their fragrance for years to come in a potpourri, I advise first dusting them while still moist with ground orris root, right befor placing the petals on the drying screens. Orris root is a fixative which will greatly extend the lifetime of the fragrance.

We just got dumped on with about 10 inches of snow. I just got shoveled out! Seriously though. I spend about 25 hours a day on the web researching. Researching products and molds and everything else that goes with starting a business. I've been busy ordering sample products and trying them out, and then ordering more of what I thought was best quality. Been busy building a web site, and trying to tell my techie computer geek that just because it's code heaven to their breed, I STILL DONT LIKE IT. Been setting up a brochure, and taking soap to the salons, visiting banks, city hall, lawyers, and accountants. Whew, I'm tired just thinking about it. But all the hard part is done now. Now I get to get back to doing the fun stuff. Like posting on here and making soap. Has anyone ordered any wedding themed soap molds? If so, where did you get them? Martin Creative (soapymolds.com) has one that I really like. It's a 4 cavity with an outlined bride and groom and it says I Do on the bottom. I was also looking for a nice "thank you" soap. I found a couple, but didn't really like them. One was too thin (1/4"), and the other was just too plain. And none were more than single cavity. Anyone have a source for them in 3+ cavity? I am exhausted from looking. Maybe I need to stop being so picky! TIA - Heather

Thanks folks, for the kind comments. I do love by birds and gardening. Kathi-MDGD..."Oriole" nectar is just hummingbird nectar (4 parts water, one part white sugar) served in a larger "Oriole" feeder. The way to prevent feeder dominance is to put out more feeders and spread them out as much as possible. Perhaps put one on the east side of the house and one on the north. Or put two or three feeders out but have several feet between them. The more feeders there are, the harder it is for a dominant oriole or hummer to claim them all. I rarely fill my feeders all the way, since I empty and replace the nectar two to three times a week. Sour or fermented sugar water will do more harm than good to the birds. So I normally fill them maybe 1/4 full. My oriole feeders are the older style with rubber plugs over the feeding ports. I remove the port plugs on at least two sides and the orioles, hummingbirds, finches, woodpeckers, and all the other birds can all drink the sugar water. If you have the larger nectar feeder, with larger ports, nearly all the feeder birds will drink it. Once the yellow jackets arrive, usually mid- to late-August here, I replace the port covers to slow down the YJs. The orioles and hummers can continue drinking. . A male oriole at the feeder. . Mr. and Mrs. House Finch at the oriole feeder. . A hummingbird at the oriole feeder . And the oriole feeder here in Larimore with an oriole. You can't prove it by these photos, LOL, but I normally only color the water in the early spring for the first filling. After that it's usually clear. It seem like every photo I had shows colored water. I'll have to fix that. I don't want to set a bad example. LOL

Bath Crystals

2 cups of rock salt

Glycerin

Food coloring

Essential oil of your choice

You can make your own bath crystals with rock salt crystals, glycerin, essential oils and food coloring. Prepare your work area with newspapers. Measure out 1/2 cup of the salt in to four different glass jars. Choose a color for each jar of bath crystals, keeping in mind the essential oil you will use to scent it with. Measure out 6 drops of glycerin into a bowl. Add one or two drops of the chosen food color into the glycerin. Stir the coloring evenly into the glycerin using craft stick or metal spoon. Quickly stir the mixture into the salt of one of the containers. Mix until the color is even, or leave it partially mixed for a more textured result. Continue this procedure with each jar.

To scent your salts you will need essential oils such as lime (enlivening), peppermint (exhilarating), lemon (refreshing), cinnamon (stimulating), tangerine (calming), lavender (relaxing), patchouli (peacemaking), rosemary (awakening), rose geranium (renewing), etc. You can get these at candle shops or craft stores. The words in the parentheses are the aromatherapy benefits derived from each scent. Choose a fragrance to complement the color of the salt you have already tinted. Add 20 to 25 drops of an essential oil for each cup of colored salt crystals, using a separate dropper for each scent. Mix with a metal spoon to blend thoroughly. Pour the bath crystals into a decorative jar, put on the lid and label. To use, add two tablespoons or more to a warm tub of bath water. Relax and enjoy.

A Note of Caution: Be very careful when using essential oils. They are strong enough to dissolve or mar plastic and wood finishes. Undiluted oils can actually burn the sensitive skin of your lips and tongue. They are also strong enough to burn your eyes. If you get full-strength oils on your fingers, wash your hands immediately with soap and warm water. Be sure not to rub your eyes with oily fingers. If you do get oil in your eyes flush them with clear water and call a doctor.

Crystal Rock Potpourri is made from water softener crystals.
They became real popular about 3 years ago. You can buy the crystals at Lowes or Home Depot 40 pounds for $5 0r $6.
