Bath Bomb Fizzes

I recently purchased some bath bomb fizzes for my grand children. I bought them at a Spa and they were very expensive. To me 5 dollars is a lot for one bath. Anyway, I have thought about making my own for them. My question to you that do this on a regular basics is: Can I make them less expensive or is that a reasonable price to pay? I want to get these for my GD's for Valentines Day.

If your advice is to make them can you tell me where to get a recipe and the supplies? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Although I have made these (we call them bath bombs here, I believe) I haven't really dabbled in these type of bath goodies to any extent, but $5 is exspensive for 1 bath.

You will find out that the most of the initial outlay is the cost of the scent; much like the cold processed soap that I make.
If you make them yourself (like most items) the initial outlay may be mor money, but in the long run, they'll be way less money the more you make.

Make them and give as gifts at celebration times, X-mas, Valentines, birthdays, etc.?

Check most any soap forums, (ummm, not this one) for many recipes and suggestions?

I wonder if Terri here makes them?

Thanks for the info, decided to just buy some and send to the girls. Maybe in the future I will try when I have more time to collect all the stuff. Thanks for taking your time to answer.

A new version of the Bath Bomb from last year that look good enough to eat...doesn't seem to say anything in the recipe regarding what makes the "chip" look to the cookie(?) - if they fizz like a bath bomb does they are a fun novelty gift, we found the fizz died out in a pretty short time with the one's that were around last year, but everybody wanted them!

Right back at you Stacy. Cookie8 and Jim, thank you for the kudos. Jim, I'm a little jealous of you, but my hips are --somewhat-- relieved that I live much further away from the bakery than you. Although, these muffins are worth the extra half hour on a treadmill. I found this recipe in a book by Lora Brody. It is not her recipe, but, she fully credited the owner/baker of the Cottage Street Bakery, Joanna Keeley. Where the owner got it from? I couldn't care less. I love them. Glad you all do too. Jim, the Cottage Street Bakery uses whole milk in their recipe, but I don't see why you couldn't substitute skim milk. That said, I still highly recommend whole buttermilk because I'm a rebel.[grin] Sol

Jo, I am making oodles of soap loafs cut into 1" thick bars (goats milk base), several clear M&P soaps, decorative soaps (bakery line, Xmas, cello bags w/dinosaurs for kids, festival fish and adorable hearts, butterflys and flowers for little girls), body butter, lotion bars, bath bombs and lip balms. I have been swamped but can't wait. My revised body butter has been a hit, almost all the recipes I got were to waxy and oily, I love mine, it is alot more work but worth it. I just made Hazel's bath bombs and love them due to the lack of oil in them so I am making quite few different fragrances in those. I am really unhappy with my flavor oil person for the lip balms, some of them are really lacking in fragrance and flavor, will be looking for a different supplier b4 next show. Gotta run, TIME TO MAKE THE SOAP!

Wanda - You can use colors that are made specifically for soap (available at MJDesigns, soap suppliers, etc.), or if you are just making a few and don't want to "go commercial," you can use the paste food coloring that is in the little tubs (at WalMart, etc.). You could try regular liquid food coloring, but I think you would be disappointed as the colors would be very pale. The paste makes really intense colors, depending on how much you use, of course. Yes, you can get the citric acid at a pharmacy, but for any really significant amount, you'd want to buy it at a soap supplier or other chemical house. Buying in small quantities (at a pharmacy) is very expensive.
