Rose petals soap & mold

Well, I played with the mold a bit. It's a nice mold, worked better than I thought it would. however it DOES NOT make the THIN petals that we saw in the picture posted from that web page-the ones where you use them as single use soaps or added to the bath water.......they are definitly more like guest soaps. The tiny ones may be single use, but the bigger ones are NOT.

It took about 20 minutes or so to make all the petals in the picture, about 10ish minutes per batch, from melt to release. Took about an 1Â½ oz. of soap/batch

There is one I stuck up in the mold so you can sort of see how thick they are. (That is the thickest end of the petal.)

They will probably make great gifts, nice for wedding showers, etc. Wish I would have had the mold in time to do some to put in the shop I have stuff in.....probably would have sold great for V-day....

Hazel--those look REALLY cool! Mother's Day is coming...they'd probably sell well for that holiday too.

Hi Ann, Just wanted to let you know that the scent from any rose will not come through in soap. You must use a fragrance oil to achieve that unfortunatley. During the saponification process the petals will become brown as well, so do not expect any color from them either. You can crush the dried petals and put them on top of the soap, tons of soapers put botanicals on top, however, they may look pretty but become a total nightmare in the shower or tub. If you are looking for a place to learn how make soap I highly recommend the soap forum I frequent. We have over 5000 members now and some very very experienced soapmakers that contribute tremendously. I would also recommend you start reading the archives section first from the start of the forum (nov. 2002) and work forward. You will no doubt learn all the do's and don'ts in regard to soapmaking. I've also noticed that some of the rose buds are turning black and drying out. The roses that this is happening to, are mainly on the south side of the house and it's pretty hot and dry there. We've had some really hot and dry weather lately and I just assumed that this was the cause. I could be wrong about it being weather related, so someone can correct me if it's something else.

she hasn't updated the site lately, but when i emailed & said i wanted the 8 cavity mold (told her i had seen the 12 cavity on ebay, but didn't want to wait for the auction to end) she emailed back & said: "Well I'm making them all 12 cavities now.. Well, I don't know about a local source - I buy it from the supermarket. There are a number of different varieties, but the most common over here are olive oil soaps, aka castille soaps. I think Dr Bronners is a common brand? I suspect most health food/supplements shops would carry it, wholefoods too probably. It's a really common ingredient in 'natural' aphid sprays, so some garden centres carry it too, marketed as a cleanser. If the mould doesn't shift you could try a tar acid cleanser, like Jeyes or Armillatox, but they're a bit more ferocious and you'd definitely want to protect your plants as best you could from splashes, and wear protective gear yourself.

Very nice Hazel. Easier than dipping the silk petals I would guess. I love that color. I tried to mix red and blue to make purple and it was a disaster. I guess I'll have to buy some colorant that is already purple. Where do you get yours from?

They are very pretty, Hazel, but I agree with you that the picture (or our conception of the picture) was misleading. They did make very nice petals, but don't seem to be nearly as impressive (in shape, size, and intricacy) as the photo posted by the seller. However, they are beautiful and I think they will sell well.

I get my soap dyes at Micheals, they are Life of the party brand. I mix red & blue to get purple, starting with red, & adding blue about Â½ a drop at a time. Can get a nice deep purple in clear, best I have come up with in the white base is a deep lavender blue, NOT a true purple.

I got mine from a lady who sells them on ebay. I didn't buy it from an auction I went to her web site & bought it. THey were being bid up too high on ebay.
Can't remember her name or the web site. You might want to check on ebay & do a search for soap mold, rose petals etc.
