Winter weather

As much fun as the Fall Weather thread has been, it's getting a little out of date! I'm still stuck here in FL, where the changes of the seasons are pretty subtle. So how 'bout some winter pictures? That's right- I want to see snow, and lots of it! Maybe a few Christmas pictures for good measure. Believe it or not, I can't wait to see the first snowfall at our place in SC after we move there. My mother always has the same question when she moves to a new house- "How does it look in the snow?" I guess I have her same love for the white stuff.

RE: Winter weather

Oh flgargoyle. We are supposed to get snow tonight. Every other predicted storm has missed up. We had about 4 inches or so a couple of weeks ago and it is about gone now.We had -3 degrees yesterday morning and our neighbor slightly down hill from us had 10 bellow.

If we do get snow I will post pictures. It is so cold but warmer then it was. About 10 degrees out there now.I just walked home from work. All of three blocks. Hehehehe I already bedded down the porch kitties with their hot water bottles and will refresh them before I go to bed tonight. I just can not let them all into the house. But we do feed then well and have a warm nest for them to sleep in and the hot water bottles.

RE: Winter weather

Hi! I have been looking for some snow pics I took a couple of years ago, but so far no luck. *sigh*

Here's one I took the other day and posted in the 'fall weather' thread. :o)

 o
RE: Winter weather

Really quick I need to get back to work. Posting this now so it can be seen in the day time. this is the web cam on Highway 95. Four miles from our house. Right now the valley is pretty well socked in with snow. It is still snowing but we only have about 2 inches, maybe.

RE: Winter weather

Well since it is snowing. I decided to do one more Christmas thing in the house. I was missing my little Putz House Village and Really wanted to see a few of my beloved indents.

When we moved in here I decided to try not to clutter our small house with all my collections at once. I left a drawer open in the bottom of the secretary to be able to change out my current display. Only I never put anything in that drawer to change it with. Well here was the opportunity do get my favorite Christmas things out and keep them safe from the kitten. also I think I will leave this display up for the winter as it is a winter scene and not just Christmas.

If I do it over another time I will try to do something about the light cords. I might even drill a hole in the back for them. I really like lights in the cabinet so there is something going to happen here for another time. Maybe Puck lights or??? Suggestions welcome.

I am done decorating.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

Chris, your display is beautiful! I don't blame you for wanting to leave it up for the winter (not just Christmas). I really like the hutch too! Pucks are a good idea, I know you can get very reasonably priced LED ones that are battery powered.
Thanks for the link to your live cam again - it looks a lot like around here. :o)

It's brutal cold here this morning. Currently -33 C (-27.4 F) with a windchill of -42C (-42.6 F)

This isn't normal for us. We do get these cold spells, but they usually don't last too long.

Thank goodness both vehicles started this morning.

Hope everyone stays warm and safe, and has a very good day!

RE: Winter weather

Thanks for the winter stuff! What a nice little community we have here. Is it just me, or are people in smaller homes friendlier? Here's what we do in the winter. Our real Christmas tree (if I become too lazy to get a real one, then i won't bother putting up any tree). My wife decorates the top of our old piano since we don't have a fireplace.

RE: Winter weather

OH How pretty flgargoyle. WOW your piano is burl wood or??Maple something. Forgot the name of it. So pretty. We do not have fireplace either so the top of the gun cabinet just has to be it. Sort of looks like a mantel.

So glad people are back posting on this board. I enjoy sharing our small house ideas.

Just flashed on something. Years ago when we had an 800 SQ FT house there really was no room for a tree and at the time getting a tree was really hard for me. New to driving in snow and not knowing how to work the 4 wheel drive which I ended up having to learn FAST. Directions posted on head liner. Heheheh. Anyway all I could reach to cut down in 10 degree weather was the bottom branch of a HUGE tree. So I had a flat tree hung up on the wall. We had a log house and it worked out really well. Did not take up much room.Looked pretty and smelled so good. My friend teased me about it for years. I would certainly do it again and just might next year. I have the perfect place to do so.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

The piano is circa 1900, and is a lovely burl veneer. Unfortunately, 1) No one here plays it, and 2) It would need a lot of work to be playable anyway! Our house is pretty much full of antiques, from a 200 y/o grandfather clock with wooden gears to an oak Hoosier cabinet which my wife restored. I grew up in a house full of antiques, so that's what I'm comfortable with.

Too funny about your 'tree'! I once had the idea to sew a flat tree out of green fabric, with a plywood backer. I would sew on multiple little hoops to hang ornaments on, and hang it on the wall. Maybe that would be a nice little cottage industry after I retire!

 o
RE: Winter weather

flgargoyle that sounds like a good idea to me, I even used to have fabric that looked like it was pine branches.

So then this even goes into the jewelry trees done for Christmas. I did one of my grandmothers junk jewelery and some of my Moms and mine . I made mine a flower basket instead of a tree so I could leave it up all the time. I do not happen to have it up right now. I was hoping to find some tiny pearl lights for it. the Christmas lights stuck out too far for my likes.

I have many antiques but it is mostly junk stuff. Not beautiful like your piano. My Hoosier is made to be painted of just plain wood. It was stripped but did not look good so I painted it back again.

Whelp Gulp Time to put on my armour and head down to the City Council meeting. This meeting could turn into a bad one. We have one insane councilman running amuck. Thank The Lord he did not get re-elected. Being the clerk I have to take his guff for one more meeting. Then Bye Bye mr bad guy.

RE: Winter weather

Im really enjoying seeing the pics posted.

chris I love your display cabinet it's beautiful and it's a great way to display your decorations (you dont have to worry about them getting dusty either!)

I loved seeing your tree emagineer. It's very different here and real christmas trees are almost unheard of probably because the trees wouldnt grow well here, or maybe they'd just dry up from the heat once they're cut so fake trees are the standard. It must smell nice though having a real tree. by the way, in that photo with your piano? I think santa has been hitting the eggnog already lol.

 o
RE: Winter weather

Actually, those were my pictures. Trees don't hold up well here in FL, either. We find if we buy it very early in the season, re-cut the trunk, put in water, and keep it in the shade they hold up pretty well.

Santa does look a little 'relaxed', doesn't he! He's sitting in a very old high chair with a caned seat. My wife collects vintage Santas- we probably have 50 or so scattered around this time of year.

 o
RE: Winter weather

flgargoyle, cute tree, and I too really like your piano! It's beautiful. Love the expression on the face of the little guy in the picture.
ronbre, your pics are great, thanks for sharing. I really like the one with the deer curled up under the trees. I bet your arbour is beautiful in the summer.
We have a real tree each year - they grow all around us and we have gone to a 'tree farm' to cut our own tree in the past, but usually we buy them from the local Boy Scout troupe.
trance, you're right - the real trees smell wonderful. If there are any places that sell 'real' trees near you, you could perhaps get the leftover branches and make a little wreath.

Here's one of our wee tree with one dog. I put it on a milk crate to make it look not quite so tiny. lol

and here's one with both dogs (sorry about the focus)

~Missy

 o
RE: Winter weather

Oh Prairie gal Lovely tree. Darling fur babies. they are so good about the tree. Our beasts would have it down in five minutes.

Brenda your snow pictures look like a park. Love the deer.

So it finally snowed big time today and it is still coming down pretty hard. I am guessing now close to 9-10 inches. Maybe more . I have not been outside to measure for awhile. I just snapped pictures from inside.

This is out our back door in the dog yard and looking out towards the neighbors old farm/ ranch yard.I am going to have to go shovel a path for the dogs. It is too deep for them to get around now. They just said we are getting about an inch an hour.

So because it was snowing. I worked on this after I trudged down to town and back.Long way from done but I MUST rest my back from leaning over it. Sorry I did not clean up my working bits of glass and nippers.

I am going to go put a roast in the oven and enjoy smelling it cook.

Chris

RE: Winter weather

aha - I found an older picture from Christmas a few years ago. I tend to do more or less decorating depending on my mood on any given year, and how much help the kids offer to give. :)

cross posting

Chris, I think we were cross-posting. Your snow pic is lovely (you must be getting the weather we just had - thank goodness we've warmed up considerably), and your mosaic is going to be beyooooootiful!!!! wow

 o
RE: Winter weather

The little guy in the painting just graduated from college Saturday(!)

Great snow pic, Chris!

 o
RE: Winter weather-B

OH Wow Prairie gal. Such a warm and inviting room. I am just drooling over your green.

LOL flgargoyle. They do grow up fast don't they.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

sorry flgargoyle I got the names mixed up but I still loved seeing your pics :) All of these snow pictures are so beautiful and ronbre how amazing having deer lounging around in your back yard! we dont have deer here either so that looks so beautiful to me.

prairie I love your room! it's gorgeous! plain jane eh? I dont think so! and your furbabies are adorable and so well behaved by the look of it.

shades your mosaic is looking wonderful, Is that the trunk you're working on for the kitchen/eating area? It looks like you're almost done.

 o
RE: mosaic

gosh it might be time to get some glasses! shades I thought those white sections had already been tiles so it looked like you were almost finished

 o
RE: Winter weather

Chris, your cabinet is lovely. That trunk is looking awesome! And I just looked at your webcam - it looks like a whiteout! You cannot see anything in the background.

flgargoyle, there is nothing like a real tree. I keep mine up too long to go real, but you can't beat the wonderful smell! A college grad, huh! Congratulations on the liberation of your pocketbook! lol
Ronbre, absolutely beautiful! The deer pic would make a nice screensaver.

Missy, obviously you have well behaved 'children', lol How old are they? I'm really digging that green room! Could you just cut that room off and mail it to me? Thanks, lol

 o
RE: Winter weather

Loretta what a pretty Christmas clip.

We just came home and I could not wait to see what you all had been up to. Hehehe

Yes Loretta there is pretty heavy fog up on the hill. Not as bad as it looks on the cam. We drove through with out too much trouble. Poor pups left in the house all afternoon were MORE than ready to get out. Another great reason to have that large master bathroom. We do not want to leave them out in this nasty weather so we leave them in that bathroom and if they do have an accident it is not going to be a disaster on the carpet. Usually we are not gone so long but got tied up at the bank. All was dry they were good kids.

Yes this is the trunk I am making to blend in with the rug in my kitchen sitting area.

I have been looking at that trunk top picture and have decided to remove one black dividing line to bring it more into balance. I am also going to pull off some in the dark green and burgundy areas. Too much solid color. It will not be all that hard to do once I get one piece out.The good thing about pictures of work in progress is I can see my mistakes before it is to late to fix them. Still a way to go but it is coming along.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

Hi, thank you for your kind words regarding my 'green' room. :o) It doesn't look like that at the moment lol - it's all pretty torn up right now. My 'babies' are around 5 - they are both (along with our cat) adopted from our local animal shelter. They are pretty well behaved - I don't have many complaints.

Here's a snowy pic from a drive my son and I took yesterday.

 o
RE: Winter weather

Oh Missy I just noticed you were signing your name. Sorry I missed it before. I was looking at your cute little skater and finally saw your name. OH DOH Your picture is so pretty!!! We thought Canada was just beautiful when we went up there to visit. I loved the sea of Blue Flax. A sight to behold. Miles of blue.

Well today was spent starting in on the shoveling us out some more. I did a larger section in the dog yard for them to get around. Joe did it on the courtyard side of the house so they could get out the door and we do not know how long that will last. For now all the snow has come off the roof. So glad we paid the extra for a steeper pitch and metal roof.I also shoveled enough in the kitty kennel to let the kitties out for some sun and to air their hides. I was sort of afraid they would sink too deep into the snow and I would have to some how get out to them. They have been in and out several times already.Last year I had to go out through the window as I could not get the kennel door open.

Today is lovely with fog coming and going. Was sunny when I was out working. I will try to do a little every day and not hurt myself.

Time to get some more work done and then I can play. Hehehe

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

Chris, I'm just rotfl at you going out through the window! Now that's a good Mommie!

 o
RE: Winter weather

flgargoyle, thank you for starting this thread, I am really enjoying it. I miss snow soooo much. When I was a kid we had an area of the yard that used to drift and I always had snow tunnels. That was back in the days of unlined rubber boots with metal clips up the front and my toes and fingers would be numb by the time I came in. I'm sure with today's lined snow boots I could stay out for hours.

I adore that piano too. It's gorgeous.

Missy, I know you miss the prairie, but that mountain view is great. One thing I miss about living on the caprock is being able to see for miles and miles.

Ronbre, your deer look so warm and cozy, even in the snow. I bet they think that arbor is just for them. Very pretty.

Chris, is your fence shaped that way originally, or did you add the arches on top for the vines? When I click on your link, I always see one picture. Is there a way to scroll back to see previous pictures?

 o
RE: Winter weather

Marti. I added the arches for the morning glories to grow up on. Was really pretty last summer and I hope to do it along the whole fence next summer. Made the dogs yard feel cooler.
that picture is a highway web cam. It moves with current time and there is no going back. It is run by the state to monitor the highway.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather-Cabinet

PHEW. Took me half the day to get this cabinet unloaded and holes drilled and that rope light mounted and everything cleaned up and put back. I am happy with how it turned out. I would have liked it to have been a little brighter. This is fine and will work as a night light so I will not have to be unplugging it all the time.

It is a little more cluttered than usual because I had to put some of the secretary stuff in it. The pieces too large to fit in the bottom drawer I had empty.

So other then typing up the minutes for the two council and P and Z meetings I did not get all that much done today.

Hope you all had a good one. Chris

Tropical Cyclone Laurence approaching

Trancegemini_wa, everything ok????????? I just saw on the Weather Channel that Tropical Cyclone Laurence is headed towards WA. Hope all is well.

 o
RE: Winter weather

Chris, you did a great job on your china cabinet. Do those lights get hot if you leave them on overnight?

 o
RE: Winter weather

Loretta I do not feel any heat from them at all. I think they are the LED lights. Really tiny. I like the way they brighten that dark corner.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

prairie-girl, excuse me for sneaking a decorating question into this thread but I'm on the prowl for a green paint. What color did you use?

 o
RE: Winter weather

hi idie, and thanks for asking, that is so nice of you! yep everything's fine here. Im a fair way down the coast of WA and the cyclones always hit way up in the north of the state so it's mainly affecting some of the mining areas that are being shut down until it passes through.

shades I love what you did with lights in the cabinet it must have taken ages to do all of that.

 o
RE: Winter weather

Hi dontcallmeshirley,
The paint I used for my main floor (and will be using again) is from Pratt & Lambert and it's called Palm Green, the number is 1643 with B2/2 base. It looks a lot darker on the walls than it does in the little chip on the link below. I love how it changes colours throughout the day and on different walls, depending on how the light hits it. I know some folks don't like that paint looks different all the time, but it sure keeps it from being boring. :o) I had posted a couple more pics in the 'fall weather' thread if you want to see the paint in different light.
hth!

trance - glad you're ok down there. I can't imagine Christmas where it's so hot! It would be so different.

RE: Winter weather

prairie our weather is always horrible this time of year, Im so jealous of all that lovely snow you have! the weather forecast for xmas day is 36C (about 97F) :)

 o
RE: Winter weather

GASP That is so HOT. We had 2 degrees F here this morning and it is 18 F right now and not going to get any warmer as it is clouding up.

Missy Thanks for the paint color information. So glad some one else asked as I wanted to know too.

My snow boots blew up last night and we were so lucky to get to go into town today and I bought the last pair in my size they had. We also bought some of that store cooked chicken and a loaf of french bread. Mommy is not going to have to cook tomorrow. Hehehehehe I have another project I am working on.

Merry Christmas.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

We're getting sleet for Christmas this year in Chicago. Oh joy. Still it made for some pretty pictures.
Here are a couple of pics (with one of my Japanese maples included) that I took this afternoon.

 o
RE: Winter weather

trance, that is hot! Hopefully there aren't fires that plague you this year. Although I try not to mind our cold too much, I think that I am designed for warmer climates lol

Chris, you're welcome for the green colour info. Sorry, I didn't know that you were wondering what it was. I'm not sure where you can get that kind of paint in the US. Hopefully it's not too difficult if someone decides to use it.

Lovely pics, cosmikcat. I like the effect on the first one. Sleet when it freezes on the trees sure is beautiful, but it can sure make for miserable driving etc. It's especially scary if trees and power lines start to come down.

We went for dinner at my parents today. yum yum. :o) Tomorrow we'll just hang out here with the boys. I don't know how many years they will still be living at home, so I plan on enjoying every minute of it.

We saw several deer out behind my parents' home. There is a herd that lives in the bush there so it's pretty common to see them there. Then when we were on the way home, we saw a moose (which we don't see very often) running along the road, and then, here in town, we saw two more bucks. It was cute - they were eating the seeds that someone had left in a birdfeeder. The feeder was swinging wildly around, but the deer were determined to get the birdfood.

 o
RE: Winter weather

We had one below zero F here this morning. Bright and sunny now and temp rising up to 7 degrees F already. No fig this mrnig so the trees are not frosty like they were yesterday. So we either get the sun and bitter cold or fog and dreary cold. Considering how the rest of the country is doing we are very fortunate our weather is as good as it is.

Hoping every one is enjoying their day.Merry Christmas. I am out of here to try to finish up a project I started this week then I will post a picture.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

Those winter scenes are all lovely, to me, living down here where it's 82, and doesn't feel like Christmas at all.

Love your tree flgargoyle and your piano. Lovely burl wood.

Missy your tree is lovely too and your green room beautiful.

Chris I love your cabinet. Lighting it was a great idea.

Have a great weekend and stay warm all of you in the winterlands.

Amazing - temps from -1 degrees all the way up to 97 degrees just among this group.
From South Carolina I'm sending best wishes to Idaho, Florida, Australia, Colorado, Texas, Canada and Chicago (is that everyone?). I hope everyone had a wonderful day! It was 65 degrees here with a steady, hard rain. I love it, but I'm sure the kiddies didn't.

Evening Loretta,

Bet those kiddies were really hoping that rain would turn white. Hope you had a nice day. I was creative and grouted two of my window sills and the top to the old kitchen cabinet we use in the master bath for a linen cupboard.

Dinner is about ready to eat.

RE: Winter weather

Happy New Year!!!!

We have had it snowing all day today. At least 6 inches. Flgargoyl you will get some snow pictures tomorrow for sure. WOW

So since I was house bound except for the short walk to town to get the mail I worked on my trunk top. Finished gluing the glass down. Need to buzz down and ruff edges and then grout. Woo Hoo I am so glad to have this much done so I can move on.

If our friend can make it here from California tomorrow we will be having company for who knows how long. Tomorrow we will set up his room and I need to do something to this house so I might not be on early. No party for us tonight and so pleased about that. We cooked a yummy ham dinner and I am baking squash pie right now. OH Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Diet squash pie. NO crust. Hehehehehehe

Be safe all of you. So glad this board is getting some action. OH dear did I say that???

Ducking out.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

Wow, the trunk is just gorgeous! I've never heard of squash pie. Could you post the recipe? Sounds like it may be something I could have since crust is big on my no no list.

 o
RE: Winter weather

Oh Matri, It is so simple and yummy. I take about 2 cups cooked pumpkin or this time it is sweet squash cooked. About 3/4 cup skim milk 2/3 cup sugar and four eggs. Nutmeg and cinnamon. To be honest I do not measure anything so this is my best guess you can not wreck it.Beat it up until smooth. Pour it in a deep dish pie plate or this time I used a deep 8 by 8 glass baking dish.I sprayed it with that oil stuff. Bake 350 for an hour or until knife in center comes clean. Let it cool long enough to not burn your mouth while eating and dig in.

The trunk has been a fun project Can't wait to start in on the confetti bathroom counter. I am SOOOO excited about this.

OH Good heavens the snow has knocked out our TV again,. Have to go sweep the dish off.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

Chris, your trunk is so cool! I hope your friend makes it in safely and that you have a wonder visit with him.

Happy New Year everyone to you and your families!

 o
RE: Winter weather

Chris, your trunk looks wonderful! Good for you for finishing it. It's neat how you echoed the rug. :o)

I gotta go make some 'squash pie' now. My hubby will love you for sure lol It sounds like pumpkin pie, without the crust (which is my least favourite part to make)

It's still cold here, We have more snow than normal. It's very pretty, as long as we don't need to go out too far. The roads are pretty slippery and my tires aren't great so I try not to go out of town any more than I have to. We walked home the other night (NY Eve) from our get together with friends, and it was so pretty with the stars, sparkly snow, and the snow was SO crunchy cuz it was so cold. No sneaking up on anyone when the snow lets everyone know you're coming.
I've also often been amazed how bright it is when the world is snowy. I wonder if it's brighter here at night (in the winter) than many places that get no snow. When it's cold and snowy with a full moon, it almost feels like daylight.

 o
again, i wish there was an 'edit' button ...

ps....
Loretta, hope you stayed warm enough. It seems unusual for you to be that cold! Stay warm! brrrrrr

FlowerLady, 82 sure sounds good today!

RE: Winter weather

Y'all must have left the door open, or something, because FL is downright chilly today, too! It's only gotten up to about 45 today, and we'll be in the 30's every night this week- VERY unusual for us.

 o
RE: Winter weather

flgargoyle, isn't it amazing! Our temps are 15 gegrees below normal. We're going to have lows in the low 20s - high teens all week.
I feel sorry for the fruit tree farmers!

 o
RE: Winter weather

Hah - here's the dumb move of the day. :o)

I cooked some eggs and set them outside to cool, then forgot about them and went and ran errands. When I got home I remembered them and went to get them. There was about a half inch of ice on the top of the pot, including one egg. The bottom remained unfrozen, and when I move the pot, the lower level of eggs rotate around the top one. oops! lol

 o
RE: Winter weather

OH Burrrrr We are having a cold spell here too. Temp was 4 degrees an hour ago and I imagine it will go bellow shortly. House is very nice inside so all is good.

Still nose to the grind stone for work. Back after Monday night's city council meeting when most of my work should be done. Then hopefully I can play again. Stay warm you all.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

Prairiegirl, after being frozen do they become 'mushy'? Can you still eat them?

Like everyone else, we've had the coldest temps here that we've seen in a long time. It has been steady in the low 20s (some high teens) for over 10 days, and is expected to continue. Ironically, we had a possibility of light snow last night, and the temps were warmer that its been all month - 38 degrees - so, no snow for us. Supposed to be 19 tonight! My utility bill will be over $200 for sure (which is high for me).

 o
RE: Winter weather

yikes you gals are doing it tough with that cold weather! brrr

my back yard. I don't cut down my ornamental grass until just before Fall cuz I love seeing it in Winter. Some days I sit under my pergola at my little bistro table and have a cup of coffee or wine... depends on what time of day and weather. ;-)

RE: Winter weather

Very pretty, buddyrose! The grasses look stunning in the snow.

Trance, your pincushion is very cute. It reminds me of one that looked like a little hat that I made in Home Ec (back in the dark ages). It is basically the same thing, with a flat 'brim' attached underneath. I still use it. :o)

My eggs were not mush, and very palatable, I think actually only the one had any touch of frost - the rest were just sitting in Very Cold Water.

idie2live, $200/month is a lot for anyone for heat, I think. Our heating bills are not usually anywhere near that high, but I suspect our houses are insulated much more than yours would be down there. We expect cold, and so tend to prepare for it from the ground up (or we should). I would guess that our building codes are significantly different.

It's warmed up a lot here. We were around 12 C (54F) here today. The roads are all mushy and all vehicles on the road are the same nondescript muddy gray colour lol.

~Missy

 o
RE: Winter weather

That's a cute pincushion. I need to make one of those you strap to your wrist. When I unpin something when sewing, I usually stick the pins on my shirt sleeve but sometimes I forget to take them out. lol

Missy, it must be really cold there if warm water could freeze that fast. Brrr.

Dh just got our gas fireplace cleaned. It wasn't burning clean and smelled like gas so I wouldn't let him turn it on. It's toasty in here now.

 o
RE: Winter weather

Crazy weather! It is 46 degrees here. My neighbor is cutting the grass! But it is back in the 20s tonight. By sunday we are supposed to be back up to normal temps. brrrrr

 o
RE: Winter weather

OH Trance, GREAT pin cushion.

Missy still laughing over the eggs. Friend used to use her front porch, enclosed, to store the Thanksgiving turkey overnight like a fridge. Was cold enough out there. We would go out and slice chunks off of it and bring them in for sandwiches. Was novel. Considering it was more then 30 below outside her unheated porch certainly was cool enough.

Buddyrose. Loving your yard. Is that red twig dogwood?

Starting to think of spring and ordering seeds. Got Burgess seed catalog in the mail and have been drooling over it. We are having lots of rain and sleeting snow sort of. And those front porch steps are slicker then the dickens. Much warmer at 37 this morning . Still icy.

So finally I am done with my city work for the rest of the week. I hope. Had to work three hours at least today. People call me at home which is useless as I do not keep my manuals and stuff at home. Sigh.

Done in Night all.

RE: Winter weather

I'm glad my duh moment is making you smile, Chris. lol I snicker at myself a LOT. Love your story of your friend using her porch as a temp fridge. I say 'why not'? Long as there's no critters around .... :o)

It's certainly much warmer here now. No way my outside would work as a fridge today. All the snow is rapidly melting. I am getting the feeling that I should go out and do my 'doggie dootie' as all the lovely doggie 'gifts' are getting exposed, but it's one of my least favourite jobs and I am procrastinating.

 o
RE: Winter weather

OH Yah I do not look forward to spring dog yard clean up. We are warming up here too. Still too much snow for that kind of cleaning. Except where we have already shoveled. Last fall I bought one of those special pooper scoopers. Sure saves my back. Way too expensive for what it is. Still sometimes a gal had to splurge. Sadly it had to be on something like that.

WE had nice sun today. Enjoyed it.

Chris

RE: Winter weather

Finally back to normal today- low 70's! We had a party Saturday (our son's college graduation) and we were able to use the back porch as a fridge! In Florida! The high Saturday was 39 degrees. It did seem to take longer than usual for the food on the grill. All of the tropical plants are wiped out from the freeze. They'll come back, but we won't know how bad the damage is for a month or so, when they put on new growth. Kinda depressing out in the yard right now.

 o
RE: Winter weather

Flgargoyle,

I understand the winter depression when all we get to see is white for so many months. So sorry your plants have been hit so hard. This is why I planted a dozen pine trees on our little half acre. I want to see some green in the snow. A few more years and we will be looking at little trees. They are all showing again but were covered for awhile in all the snow.

Another reason for me to put as many of the garden totems up high on stakes. So the pretty colored glass will sparkle above the snow. Hoping to get a bottle tree or two up next summer too and put it high enough to be above the deepest snows. My neighbors will be rolling their eyes at me. Ask me if I care!!! SNORK.

Dinner is ready to munch on.

RE: Winter weather Me Again

Missy I was laying out the tiles I am making in the master bath and thinking about your Lovely paint. Had to come back and look at the colors again and the first picture to load for me was your Christmas room. Already seems such a long time ago. Weird how time flies.

I just love that green you have. Wondering if I could do one wall in the darker like yours as a focal wall and then the rest of the room lighter. Printed out your paint page , thank you, and am going to take it in the next time we go to town and see if I can find the same or something close to experiment with. We have a smaller end wall in our master bath I think that green you have would be perfect.

I am always two projects ahead, in my mind, of my ability to get things done. The good news is I am getting close to getting my glass tiles made and marked and cut paper patterns for around the sink for the rest of the tiles I need to make and cut. OH Boy.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

Aw, what a nice compliment, Chris, thank you! I think that one wall in darker, and the rest in lighter tones would be beautiful. I've always loved that look in rooms. If you want to send me an email with your name and address, I'd be happy to send you a 'sample'. When we took down our partial wall, I saved a big piece of the painted paper from the gyp-rock in case I had to take it to the paint store to match. (That was before I found the paint chip with the info on it.) I'd be happy to cut a piece off for you and pop it in the mail. :o)

flgargoyle, I am sorry to hear your yard plants are suffering. I am a plant lover and have felt so badly for those in the South that have been dealing with the freezing temps.

I hear you on the evergreens, Chris. We live in an area that has lots of spruce and pine, so we get that green in the winter, but it is pretty black/white/gray otherwise. I think that the lack of colour outside in the (very long) winter is why I like so much colour inside!

 o
RE: Winter weather

OH Missy I would love that. Thank you. I will email you through GW.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

No problem, Chris. :O)

So, we started with two half walls this morning (here's one partial one), and my DH decided today was the day. Soon there were major holes in my ceiling.

Half walls were gone. New poly vapor barrier was up, and insulation put back.

It was a good day (even though I had to go to the dump peeeeeyewwwwww) My doggy is just SO not happy to have my kitty sitting almost on top of him.

I think it will look so different once the ceiling is all the same colour/texture, as well as the floor. The kitchen is almost secondary at this point.

~Missy

 o
RE: ewww

So, kitchen being secondary - maybe not. I found an older pic of one the old corner cabs. eww

Photobucket

Did I mention that I can't wait for my new kitchen? lol

 o
RE: Winter weather

Missy, excitement is in the air! I'm excited for you. Maybe you should start a thread for your kitchen so we won't have to wade through this on to find out the latest, pleeeeze! lol
I saw your post on the kitchen forum and you got some good tips, questions and advice.

 o
RE: Winter weather

yes I'd like to see you start your own thread too coz this one is getting really long! :) when did you start the kitchen missy? and where are you cooking your meals in the mean time?

 o
RE: Winter weather

we had 43c (110F) here yesterday and today. The bad news is our main a/c overheated and broke down and it could be two weeks before it's fixed because all the a/c places are so busy right now :( ... the good news is it's only going to be around 38c/100f tomorrow :/

someone send me some cool relief - Im dying here hehe

 o
RE: Winter weather

When I was young we only ha 2 small window a/c units, one in my room and one in the kids room. During the hottest part of the day we stayed closed up in those rooms - the rest of the house would be miserably hot!
It was 67 here yesterday, so we seem to be through with the extreme cold for now - I'll send it your way, enjoy!

 o
RE: Winter weather

Hi Loretta, Thanks for the encouragement. The excitement for me comes and goes as the project proceeds at an uneven pace depending on DH's time limitations. :o) It is exciting to see each stage come and go. I keep telling DH it's one step at a time. Eventually all the steps will be done.

trance, that sounds awfully hot. I feel badly for you. I love hot places, but that might be more than I could deal with. I guess we all just deal with things as we get used to them. I'd happily send you some snow and cold Northern winds if I could.

We started the kitchen in mid Nov I think lol I didn't really pay attention to the date. I am cooking in the 'old' kitchen still. The stove and fridge and sink etc are still all working. We don't have any overhead lighting (boy those construction lights are BRIGHT and HOT!! I'll see if I can dig out a pic of the 'current' kitchen.

I will try to get up my nerve to start a thread for pics and info. I just wish there was a way to delete threads once you're done with them. I don't know if I want my stuff hanging out here for ever. lol

 o
another pic

I found another pic from further back. The pile of cardboard in the near foreground (with stuff on it) is the hardwood for the floors.

 o
RE: Winter weather

You are making good progress. You are going to stay with the same layout, right? On that picture with the walls torn out, is that the new window?
Its easy to delete the pics you post on Gardenweb. All you have to do is delete them or move them (to another folder and they dissappear from the post).

 o
RE: Winter weather

Living with construction is hard, but it is going to be soooo nice. Are you going to take out the fur down? (the framed in section above the cabinet - everyone seems to have a different name for it)

 o
RE: Winter weather

Hiya,

Loretta, the window in the pics is the old one. The new one will be more than twice as big. Yes, we're keeping basically the same layout. :o)

marti8a, if you mean the bulkhead (I've never heard the term 'fur down' - I'll have to google it) over the window, no, it has to stay. It is part of the external construction of the house. That wall of cabs (sink run) is in a bump out, and the roof itself is part of that bulkhead. If you mean above the cupboards, there is nothing built in there. It's currently just empty space. I think the pic is a bit of an optical illusion because of all the diff paint colours. I can sure see why you'd think there was one there. I never noticed till you mentioned it. :o) I've linked a before pic that might make it a bit more clear.

Chris, I finally mailed your paint chip today, sorry I'm so slow. It will likely take at least a week (maybe two) to get there. Our mail system is pretty slow.

Here is a link that might be useful: 'before pic'

 o
RE: Winter weather

EEEEKKK Missy looks scary having all of that opened up. I know it needs to be done to get the proper support for that new window you are adding. Your new kitchen is going to be wonderful.Still looks scary.

The painting on my end is on hold until after this week. I will be working quite a bit and Joe said not to even think about painting. Even the one small wall. Hehehehe I bought everything I need to have ready when my city work is done. Ya never know I might finish it up early this week.

Finally I have stage one of my bathroom counter completed. Still need to do the edge trim and the front edge of the counter. Then start in on the back splash.

First two pictures.

Snowed here today again and over night. Only about three inches and it is fairly warm and melting pretty fast. Streets might be an ice slick in the morning.

RE: Winter weather

Great job Chris! I love that design. It must be nice to have talent -wish I had some :(.

 o
RE: Winter weather

Missy, your kitchen sure is clean for being under construction! I'm afraid I'm not that clean when we are in the middle of a project.

Chris your counter looks great. I really like those colors.

 o
RE: Winter weather

Chris, your counter is going to be incredible! What good ideas you have. It's great that you can take ideas through to completion.

Loretta, I sure wouldn't say you haven't any talent. Have you looked at the door you just updated? Also, the bits of your house that I've seen are lovely. Not everyone needs exactly the same talent - what a boring world that would be!

mati8a, our place isn't really all that spotless lol The only bits that are reasonably clean are those needed for food prep and consumption. The rest of the place is well - *ahem* - dust (and other funky) bunnies are multiplying faster than real bunnies!

 o
RE: Winter weather

Thanks Loretta Marti and Missy. I am working on the front edge today. Had to get away from it for a little bit. That glue smell gets pretty strong. Hope to have the front edge and top edge on by tonight. I would love to grout tomorrow. Not sure if my fingers are up to it. Pretty tender right now.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

Chris, if you keep smelling that glue you won't care how your fingers feel! I guess we're too old (eh, mature) to enjoy getting high, huh? Trailershut.com

RE: Winter weather

Does anyone else out there quilt? I have been putting this off, due to the kitchen renos, but the due date for my friend who's having twin girls is creeping up. I decided that I better get these done before the wee ones make their way into this world. I got the top of one done today.

I had to somewhat clean out my sewing room before I could start - a good portion of my kitchen was in there, and my sewing machine and material was pretty buried ugh. I moved most of it into our bedroom and some elsewhere in the house. Would you believe it that I can't find my ironing board??? I looked everywhere for it, but it seems to have wandered off lol. (You can tell how often I iron eh? hahaha)

Several of the ladies sew, and I know Chris quilts. Your quilt is beautiful. I know your friend will appreciate such a thoughtful gift.

 o
RE: Winter weather

OH So pretty Missy. Your friend will love them and the girls will treasure them when they are grown. You have done a beautiful job.

I am laughing at your kitchen in your sewing room. I am too tried to get back up for pictures. Tomorrow I will show you MY kitchen in my sewing room too. Well upper cabinets so far. And two from the laundry room too.

This kitchen upgrade suddenly happened. Was looking at cabinets on Craigs list then one thing led to another and the guy will be here at 9 tomorrow morning to start rebuilding refacing our cabinets. He will start on the uppers. yippiee no more contact type paper and cardboard.

I think he came Thursday to measure and make up a quote. Then called Friday with amount. We got half the money for him today and he is starting tomorrow. EEEEKKKKK And we had to drive 100 miles round trip to the bank and I had to work at the city and I had to fix dinner and unload cabinets. Oh and get boxes. I am excited and stunned ,happy ,tired.

I still have to work some at the office tomorrow and Monday night is the council meeting again. If I can get all my work done and ready for the meeting this weekend I might take Monday off. Lots of it I can do from home.

So will be back when I can. Might be busy for a few days.

Chris

RE: Winter weather

O Chris, that's so exciting! Wow, you don't waste any time, do you. lol good for you! I hope you do start a new thread so we can see your progress. :o)

 o
RE: Winter weather

WOW that is quite a bit too. Seeing snow from many places. We are having heavy rains tonight???? Joe was going to go ride his snowmobile tomorrow. Might not happen now.

Stay warm Loretta Great picture. Love it when the snow flakes show up in night shots.

Today I grouted the master bath counter. Still a bit of clean up to do . Hands are screaming at me so will wait until tomorrow.

I am going to call my Mom. Today is 28 years since I found her.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

My nephew lives outside of Hilton Head, Sc and they also got snow!
Oh, Chris, thats so nice about you and your Mom! I hope you have a nice 'phone visit'. Happy 'Anniversary"!
Grout on, sister! Grout on.

 o
RE: Winter weather

Missy, I love your quilt. What a lucky baby. I like to quilt too but haven't been able to do much lately.

We got some snow too, about a foot when it was done, which was a lot for us.

I put a lot of pictures on my blog if anyone wants to see them.

 o
RE: Winter weather

Thank you Marti8a for your quilt kudos.

I looked at your blog. O my goodness, you have a lot of snow. I'm so sorry you lost your trees!!! I just posted on another forum that it's helpful to shake tree branches if they're not used to snow, but that wouldn't work on trees that large. :o( The smaller trees/bushes would likely benefit from a good shake.

quote ...
Hi, please forgive me if I'm out of line (newbie). I've never posted here before but I've lost trees to snow so wanted to say something.

Although they can look beautiful, if you have trees/bushes with leaves and they get weighed down with snow the branches can break very easily. When we get snow here out of season I always go outside with a broom (or something) and shake the branches until I knock all the snow off. Trees that have lost their leaves and are used to snow don't suffer, but when they've leafed out and we get a late snowfall, it's awful when the branches break off.
Again, I am just trying to help. :o)
~Missy

Chris, happy 'anniversary'. I hope you have a wonderful phone conversation. :o)

RE: Winter weather

49 of the 50 states have snow on the ground right now! North FL got up to 1/2" yesterday. It was 45 and rainy here- about 25 degrees below normal for this time of year.

 o
RE: Winter weather

Marti8a, that a lot of snow! I can't remember the last time we've had more than a couple of inches. Down here we still get excited when its below freezing , lol
Flagargoyle, when you build your new house, you will be seeing some of the 'white stuff' every year. The temps are quite a bit cooler in that area.

 o
RE: Winter weather

LOL Had to share. Winter day I grouted the top of the mosaic trunk today. I did it in white so it does not show much in the picture. Well silly little Abby had to get into the act while I was trying to take a picture of the grout. Since she is better looking then the grout this is the picture you all are getting. Hehehehehe

RE: Winter weather

I'm looking forward to snow! I absolutely love it- always have. I have a friend who lives very close to our property, and he always sends me snow pictures- I can't wait! The best thing is- they shut everything down, so I don't have to worry about driving in it, Snow day- Yay!

 o
RE: Winter weather

Oh, that table dancing kitty is too cute! lol thanks for sharing. :o) (Your grout looks just fine from here)

 o
RE: Winter weather

Chris, you need a video of Abby dancing so you can put her on youtube. She could be famous! lol

 o
RE: Winter weather

LOL I think she was chasing dust bits in the sun. It does look like she is dancing. She is such a riot. The only video I have of her is her nursing her own toe. So cute. Oh and her pink mouse attack.

 o
RE: Winter weather

I thought I'd post this pic of the hoar frost here, too, as I know not everyone reads my 'trepidation' thread. :o)

We've had a lot of fog here this winter (unusual for us) and the frosts have been spectacular.

See you in a few days.

RE: Winter weather

i've enjoyed catching up reading on what everyone has been doing during this winter weather..i kinda feel like a slug as I haven't really gotten a lot done here.

someone asked earlier about the deer that are in our yard..2 years ago mama brought her fawn here in the summertime..and our cat Mitzi took him down when he was really really little..about the size of a chiuaua dog.

well then that year they slept together in the hemlock grove behind our house..and would feed at our feeders..well this winter they are so tame they'll nearly eat out of our hands..usually it is just the two of them..Bambi (boy) is getting to where he is beginning to develop his manliness..but he is very tame..comes to about 10' from me when i put out corn and bread for him..mama is a tiny bit more warey..stays about 15 feet or so away..

this past week we have had 30's for our highs..so we have had some melting and it looks like spring is close by..i'm very excited about spring...winters are so long in Michigan

RE: Winter weather

Woo hoo, I finally finished painting my Missy Green and have most of the things put back.

Missy scrolling through to get to post here I came across your post of: Jan 18,19:08. Your green popped out at me and seeing it on my wall and computer screen at the same time feels so weird. I just knew it was the perfect color when I saw it in your house. I really love it. Thank you so much for sending me the chip for the color match. I never would have chosen it from the store chip color you showed. DH likes the color too. That is a bonus.

I wish there was a way to get this wall and the kitchen green to show together. They are open to each other but the walls are too far apart. Will give it a go later.

Chris, that color is beautiful. I think I love every shade of green there is, lol

 o
RE: Winter weather

Hiya, I'm sorry I've been missing - I am home. :o) I feel pretty yukky (I think the hotel recirc air messed up my lungs), and I've been trying to get the quilts done.
I haven't read all the threads yet, but will do so in the next few days hopefully and post there. Looks like lots of people have been posting - nice to see. :o)

bre, thanks for the info on your deer. It's neat that they are so tame. Do you ever worry about hunters?

Chris, thanks for the update on your paint, and the pic. :o) It looks GREAT!! It looks lighter than what's on my walls. Perhaps you have more light there ... I am so glad that you're happy with the colour! It's always a bonus when DH likes it too! lol

I haven't gone through all our pics yet, but here's one that I took on the way to the wedding this weekend (picture on the fly so not great quality, sorry). The trip was great - roads dry and mostly clear (thankfully). Had to stop while one small avalanche was cleared, as well as where they were doing some avalanche control by blasting (what an awesome sound that was).

RE: Winter weather

OH How Beautiful Your mountains look so much more rugged than ours do. So glad you had a nice trip and are safely home. Sorry about your lung deal going on. I know the feeling from hotel air.

The paint does look lighter here but I think it is an illusion as it matches the chip pretty darn close for a computer paint match, And when I look at your walls on my computer screen in front of my wall it looks the same. LOL

Can't wait to see the little quilts finished. They are so cute. Still wanting to do my one big quilt. Some day. Might be sewing on it in the heat of summer at the rate I am going now. Or heaven forbid NEXT winter.

Glad you are back. no winter news from here today.

Chris

RE: Winter weather forgot this

Now we think we have small houses. This little house is right next door. I had to do a careful crop job to remove our house and shop from the picture. And the second picture is the old grainry in town here. All in winter. Took these pictures yesterday on our walk about town.

RE: Winter weather

Finally getting to painting the cabinet in the master bath I did the mosaic tile top on. The picture is a bit fuzzy and it needs a second coat. I can get that done later this evening. So a nice winter day. You all can slap me for this but I sure do hope we have some more winter to come as I am not even close to getting my winter projects done.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

Wow, that is a tiny house, Chris! :o)

Yes, we may need to slap you for wishing more winter!!!!! I am SO ready for spring. It's been very pleasant here the last few days. Today is supposed to get to 10 C (50 F) today which should go a long way to melting the snow that's still kicking around. The sun has been shining and I'm still LOVING my new window. :o) :o)

I finished off the baby quilts - will try to post pics later.

Chris, your 'new' cabinets look great! What kind of 'one big quilt' are you planning? Biggest one I ever did was my first - for our king sized bed. 2304 2" squares (36 squares that are made up of 8 2" sq x 8 2"sq). I have only made single size ones since lol

RE: Winter weather

OH WOw missy. Fantastic quilt. So MANY pieces.

I am hoping to make up a scrappy kind of quilt. Large squares with ragged edges. Emagineer gave me a link for them. I will look it up for you when we get home. I am sort of in a rush to get ready to go to town. Woo Hoo Shop till you drop day. Hehehehe

Can't wait to see your baby quilt pictures. The Mom is going to be thrilled I am sure. Babies too later. OH ugh I can not imagine twins. EEEEKKKK

Catch you all later I am on my way down this mountain.

Chris

 o
RE: Winter weather

O Chris, scrappy quilts are SO cute! I haven't ever made one, but I've seen them. I was very tempted to make these latest ones 'scrappy'. They just seem so comfy and cozy and homey! Hope you had fun 'shopping till you dropped' lol

Here's some pics of the baby quilts - sorry for the picture quality. I haven't anywhere to lay them out properly for pics - the background is kinda wrinkled ugh.

Now, now girls - no slapping allowed, lol. But pulling hair is ok!

Missy, I just love your quilts! They are adorable. It looks like so much work (and love) went into them. And that blue quilt is amazing. I cannot imagine working with all of those little squares.
Chris, I know you had a great time shopping!

 o
RE: Winter weather

OH Missy the little quilts are just as cute and sweet as can be. They will be adored for the girls and Mom.

When I get the kitchen stuff out of the sewing room I will be able to start in on sewing them. Going to have to dig for that link later.

And right now the living room is streaming sunshine so pretty on my Missy green wall. It just glows. Loving it.

Shopping day was really long. We just got home and I am exhausted. So many places to stop in. Not only shopping but stop in newspaper office for reporting city information and county court house for more city stuff. They home and unload the pile of stuff. Put groceries away.

Did you all know you can buy a frozen turkey and the butcher will cut it in half for you. Got a real good turkey deal but had to buy the large size. Cut in half we now have two 10 pound half birds to cook later. Works for me. They will also do hams for us this way. And all wrapped up extra special for the freezer for free. Woo Hoo.

I MUST get some coffee into me.

Behave yourselves you all.

Chris
