Life-changing event

Below is a link to a little furry package would could quite possibly turn my life upside-down. And I cannot wait!

Emma is a rescue dog. She spent the first eight years of her life in a puppy mill, poor little girl. But she's been sprung and is now looking for a forever home. Emma is somewhat traumatized from her experiences -- and that's no surprise.

*I* have been looking for a little soul just like Emma, whom I could love and support with patience and gentle-ness. For me, it was love at first sight when I found her listing at Petfinders.

I e-mailed an application back to the shelter owner who rescued Emma. With luck, I'll get a firm response by the end of this weekend.

Cross your fingers for me, okay? Or pray, chant, light candles...whatever you do to incur good luck and positive results. I believe in the core of my soul that this little girl is supposed to come home with me.

I'm driving to St. Louis on Monday, Oct. 10, to pick her up. I passed the phone interview with the foster mom, who in turn gave me a glowing review to the woman who runs the rescue organization.

I was going to go see it, but when I told my daughter that I was going she told me not to go. A friend of hers had seen it and said it was very depressing. I too am a widow, lost my husband 5 months ago from pancreatic cancer and my kids are always protecting me from anything sad or depressing.

mrspete, Good suggestions! I like the idea of bookshelves around the piano. I remember in the Tucker Bayou they have lovely shelves in the dining area yet I didn't want shelving there so love the idea of it around the piano. My husband was born in Germany, raised in France and Chad, African and he travels to cool places several times per year with his job (and I get to go sometimes!!) so we have some special things we'd like to display so that would be perfect along with books, etc. We really like the idea of an apartment, too. It seems to make perfect sense for our family at this stage in our lives. I DO still need a school room because my son has Autism and although he's 14, certain subjects he's well below grade level and other subjects has excelled. We could be schooling for SEVERAL more years. We have family that visit from France, Spain and Maine and when they visit it's for several weeks - not just a weekend so that extra room will be used. I will work on one less bedroom, extending the mudroom and fix the cramped space in the kitchen/pantry. I like the 1/2 bath for when we come in from the pool but might can do away with it... or might can put it closer to the back door. I'll work on that! YEAH!!! I feel like I'm moving forward. I can already tell I am going to love these forums, and that you guys will probably get sick and tired of me asking questions in the near future! You've given me so much to think about. I think one problem is that for two years, this house has been at best a hypothetical..."if" we build, what type of house? "If" we build, how much land should we look for? So I believe that I got stuck looking at hypothetical houses online, picking a few that "could" work for us, should we find acreage. But now that we have and the hypothetical house is more a reality, I do think that an architect is the way to go. When I really look at that plan, the list of things I love about it is far shorter than the list of things I would change. Mrspete, you pointed out that the only real privacy downstairs would be the study, and that hadn't dawned on me. Since that bedroom would be occupied by our oldest (hence the reason for an extra half bath on the main level), then she would be the only one benefitting from that privacy. I hadn't thought about that before you said it. As far as visualizing how a plan would work for us in the foreseeable future, I've really only gotten so far as comparing it to the house we are in now. Bigger bedrooms for growing kids, doing away with the huge bonus room that we never use now, wider hallways and a better flow to the layout. You have all given me so much to think about and I really do appreciate it! Oh! And PS: I do know that the large southern porches are expensive to build, and we could potentially be persuaded to make them a smidge smaller, but for the most part they stay. One reason we fell in love with this land and snatched it up is that it comes with breathtaking views and all the acreage is clear and sprawling and usable and just lovely. So outdoor space was up there at the top of our must have list, just barely below "enough rooms to cram all our kids into" ;)

Ha, Rockybird, that is a tale of adventure! Brave lady. Robo, I think I missed out on reading What Color is Your Parachute when I should have read it in my 20's. Or maybe I lacked the self-awareness to understand what I really value and enjoy in my work. One thing you mentioned is coworkers, and my job is performed in near total isolation from colleagues, which is one of the factors motivating me to want to change. Honestly, I think if I could find a position in my field or any other where I could relegate work to the role of "just work" in my life that would be half the battle. It's the kind of job that weighs heavily on my mind even when I'm not there. But I also think that even if some evil twist of fate meant I had to stay in the same job until retirement, there are lots of other ways to significantly change one's life for the better. New hobbies, new social connections--or letting go of those that weigh you down more than sustain you--learning new skills that may not be for a job but that are fulfilling.

I once rescued a part Pom from a freeway median. She was injured, a tear in her side. Nursed back to health she became the most devoted little companion for my grandmother. Very sweet and loyal.

House train with lots of enthusiatic praise and treats! She'll get it.

Barbara, keep your Wee Wee Pads to yourself. lol Fact is, my neighbor down the hall wanted a dog. Bought everything -- and I mean EVerything this dog would ever need. And then the immigration laws changed in the British Virgin Islands. This changed everything because my friend spends every winter in the BVI and doggie was to accompany her.

Fast forward to last week. Friend heard that I was getting Emma. Friend offered to give me absolutely everything, including THREE BOXES of Wee Wee Pads! lolol

Sorry Eileen, no photos. I haven't had time to take any, and I don't belong to any of those Photobucket-y internet places where you can post them. But maybe Emma's bio page is still up. Great photos there.

Emma is home! Today started at 7:00 a.m. for me. A road trip to St. Louis, where I picked up Emma from her foster home. Then a return trip which took about six hours thanks to all those doggie potty breaks. lol But we're home now and both exhausted. Poor girl, she doesn't know what's going on and there's no way to explain it to her. She spent about an hour sniffing and circling the house, as if she were looking for her "real" family.

Well, my hope is that time will help Emma to accept me as her new "mom" and this place as her one-and-only home.

I'm just glad that I was lucky enough to find her. She's going to do as much good for me as I could possibly do for her.

I post at several Gardenweb forums and everybody wants to know how Emma is doing! lol So to save myself a case of carpal tunnel from typing and retyping, follow the link below for an update. In a nutshell, she grows happier and more confident every day, and she is an absolute joy.
