The Single Life

ah, well;

while just looking around, a week or so ago, i found this place for singles and sneaked in [i'm not single-you see] to see what those whom are talk 'shop-talk' about [this is serious lurking].

nothing lurid. some latent anger, some latent loneliness and a lot of comments by folks 'just getting on' [just as you'd expect].

i did pick up on one thing, though, that nobody commented on: the fact that this board had been 'here' once before, was apparently taken away, and is now restored [for which all were pleased].

hey, y'all; when a board goes off into nowhere it's usually because of a lack of activity. it can be something you enjoy only if you use it. to let it sit idle for days and days on end is something like the kiss of death.

for whatever it's worth.

Don't know this for certain since I wasn't here at the time myself but I've heard that the reason the board was pulled had more to do with threads that were - um, inappropriate for general readership.

Censorship can be fatal to a forum such as this. People need to vent, and it can be done with 'taste'. I think everyone's a bit nervous, actually, unsure of what constitutes an acceptable topic for discussion.

It's quite unhappy to not have the blooms you wanted for the holidays. In my case, I can delay blooming by wrapping my bulb (scape and all) in newspaper and placing it in the fridge until I think it's time. It worked for me, but of course, the flowers wouldn't be as spectacular as they would bloom normally. But well, I guess I couldn't have the cake and it eat too, right? Xuan

paul, I'm sure it's frustrating not having a choice of temperatures in your apartment. Do you have any outdoor space (balcony, outdoor windowsill, fire escape) where you could put them in the fall for a while? Why don't you try to swap them for something else more suitable for your growing conditions, rather than pitching them. I'm sure someone would be happy to take them off your hands. (I've already got one that I'm waiting somewhat impatiently to bloom, so I don't need any more!)

Freshair, glad you enjoyed it. Carrie, how nice to have an abundance of berries for the birds. The resident mockingbirds here eat the berries from my Youpon holly trees all winter. One dry year when the youpons didn't produce berries I fed the mockingbirds dried fruits like raisons and cranberries. Wow Carrie and Kathy -- sounds like signs of spring are popping up already with your early blooming daffodil and iris! My larkspur seedlings and columbines are coming along nicely with the recent rains, but that's about it for new stuff, not counting the weeds of course. How about the rest of you? You are welcome to add any photos to this thread or start a new one. We need all the encouragment we can get to make it through these next few weeks of winter :-)

Annie, how is the search for appatizers for the wedding going? Here's a couple more suggestions for you. How about tiny meatloaves made in mini muffin pans? Or Sauerkraut balls. This was my MIL's recipe for them. Sauerkraut Balls 8 slices b acon 1/2 c. fineluy chopped onion 1 clove garlic, minced (not in my house with my allergies!) 1 can (16-oz.) sauerkraut, drained (I use bagged) 1/2 c. mashed potatoes 1 T parsley 1 1/2 c finely crushed corn flakes 2 eggs beaten Oil Fry bacon in large skillet crisp, drain & crumble. Pour off all but 2 T. fat. Add onions & garlic to fat in skillet. Cook & stir until onion is tender. Remove from heat, stir in bacon, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes & parsley. Drop by rounded teaspoonful onto waxed paper lined baking sheet. Gently form ball shapes. Cover with waxed paper or plastic wrap, refrigerate until firm or overnite. Dip sauerkraut balls in eggs. Roll in cereal. Heat oil to 375° F., fry until golden brown about 1/2 min. Drain on paper toweling. Serve hot. Can be fried 24 hours in advance and reheat in 400°F. oven about 10 minutes. We make a bunch and freeze them after they are fried. Just thaw and heat in an electric roaster. Don't ask how many the recipe makes! I have no idea! Tami

I was on the "old board" and I do know exactly what happened to it. It became a chat room where singles issues and relationship issues were totally ignored, and only those who "owned" the "chatroom" were talking to each other.

Hmm...I thought the reason it was pulled was because it got so it tended too much toward...uh...innuendos and...uh discussion of sexual techniques and...uh "equipment"...

LindaC, you ever go to the Outdoor Cooking forum? Seems like it is little more than a bunch of guys talking about and comparing their equipment. Very few threads concern BBQing or grilling.

I ought to stop here more often!!! Yeah....Pete....I stop over at the BBQ place every now and then....but seems all the talk is about how hot is gets!! No technique at all....no recipes even....
