Hi all,
I'm in Ohio looking for apartments, jobs, etc. It's great being around old friends - sucks looking for a place to live, though. I found a pretty nice little house, but have to beat out the competition for it (lots of people looking at it).
Might start a daycare up here - all my friends seem to have had lots of babies, the whole town is full of little people - everywhere I look, babies!

Good luck in the househunting, Fishead. The worst part is he actual moving but then fun once you get there to arrange things so it will be "you"

I just got a request for free seeds from my Trade list. atticville, Are you sure the email was from a GW member? Cold emails often come from non-members, or previous members (now maybe banned). If they emailed you via GW, did you get the member name? Sometimes it shows to the receiving party and sometimes it doesn't. I don't correspond with anyone much about anything, until I find out a member name, and look at their Member Page. I just got the "want" list of what I have to trade... "Everything"! I kinda saw that coming. You'll learn to better word things like maybe pick 'some' or a 'few', or 'up to X number of packs' instead of leaving yourself wide open. I have heard of a few others that make outlandish requests at the expense of a sharing member's generosity. So, assuming they provided their valid GW member name, how are you going to proceed? I think I'd be tempted to say that I really didn't have the time to do such a HUGE (I see you have 33 items listed!) Postage Offer and instead steer them to the many Seeds for Postage offers on the Forum. If they find that cold emailing works with you and they get seeds, they will likely be cold emailing others begging as well. Newbies or newer members might not realize that it isn't the 'norm, for people to be cold emailing them asking for free seeds, and they might 'cave' and send free seeds, even picking up the postage...sigh. hmmm...maybe a thread covering 'cold emails', with no member name provided, or nothing to trade is needed...think? Katishooked and Sapphire, now you know why our lists stopped being To Do ones and became Too Long To Do Lists instead. So many great ideas abound on this place, daily, we better all live forever to make even half what we want. As for where are we going to put it.....LOL, I'm not even going there on that one. Kirk's post is a great one to remember. Lots of folks 'forget' we have a conversation side where we can chat about everything else and really get to know one another. Lots of support and fun there too. And photos not garden junk. Pets, kids, silly stuff, you name it. No one can say we don't have fun on this Forum. LOL And if you need any prayers or support, this group is the BEST ever and can work a few miracles at times. Can you tell, I LOVE our little family here! This is my "other" home. hugs, Karen

eaglesgarden, your lot sounds almost identical to mine (I think mine might be 55 wide and not quite 150 long, but ... same basic shape/size, house a little closer to the front than the back, but mostly in the middle). Ten years ago when I started my first compost pile, it was just about this time of year (bought the house in June, started a compost pile long before a garden!), so I had the same starting issue of almost no browns but plenty of weeds and scraps I wanted to compost. You're right to think that cardboard and junk mail are great "browns". But I'll confess, I find 'em ugly. I know "ugly" isn't the point - reducing the waste stream, making a great garden amendment, and being fascinated by the process are much more to the point. But for me, I just enjoy turning the pile more when I am not staring at trashy scraps. (Ignore this next advice if you don't share my issues with this!) That first year, I got a bunch of wood chips to start my bin. My city gives them away (getting a whole load from the utilities folks would have been too much for me at that point!). I got enough to fill the bin maybe 1/3 full, and that was enough to use to add my weeds and scraps to all that first summer (until the leaves started falling from the trees). It was a great solution for me - no, the chips didn't break down FAST, but all the rest of the stuff I put in there heated the pile up and broke down well, and the chips meant there were always enough browns to avoid stinkiness. People here tend to (seem to) talk about two main methods of composting - hot "batch" compost where you add everything at once, either layering or mixing, and then don't add anything more until you harvest, and cold slow piles to which one adds gradually. I use an in-between method (even now). I start with a bin full of browns - generally fallen leaves, somewhat shredded by my lawnmower if I've been energetic, unshredded if not. Then, for the next many months, I add to that pile, mostly adding greens (kitchen scraps, weeds, grass clippings from 3 neighbors who prefer to bag). I stir in these greens each time I add them, and often the pile heats up, getting marvelously steamy. At a certain point I decide it is high time that I quit adding to that bin, and move to a different bin (which means I need to harvest the cured compost from that bin to empty it out and begin again). I don't know that these cycles of heating and cooling over and over do anything special for me or the resulting compost. It's just the easiest / most fun way for me. I am too lazy / not organized enough / have too little land to fill a 4x4x3 bin all at once, and I am too curious and meddlesome to leave the pile sit and be a slow cold pile. I guess I'm just trying to say, you can do this in whatever way fits your life; there are nearly as many variations on how-to-do-it as there are folks composting! lcpw

While we're waiting for more members to join I'd love some suggestions on how many items should be included in each package. I know we could just use our best judgement but it might be helpful for some of the newbies to have a guideline to go by. Also, if anyone wants to move the dates up and start earlier please chime in and say so. I just picked those dates so that those of us in the COLD zones who get plants could get them in the ground when they come. LMK, thanks!

Good luck on the house fishead.....I have a bud that does daycare and she makes out pretty well with it...look into the certification and insurance that goes along with it though.

No reason to be scared of me joules.....I am just a puppy dog...I only nip, I don't bite...(unless it turns out that we are related by marriage anyway ;) )....I'll try not to be so scary from now on....inquire anytime, most of my rants are for two reasons...1. for me to vent what's going on in my life...and 2. for people to be entertained on a boring friday night, as this board gets dead and it's up to me to waste bandwith sometimes...I always accomplish at least one of them and I don't require a satellite dish.

Hi everyone! I'm Marilou and have been single for eight years. (My husband died of a heart attack when I was 39.) I have two children, now grown and (mostly!) on their own.

I'm not dating anyone but would like to, if the right person comes along. So far in my singlehood, I've learned that all the Mr. Rights are taken and that a few Mr. Wrongs exist but aren't worth bothering with--they're single for a good reason! Then there's the occasional Mr. Maybes, who seem okay at first--until I figure out "Well, maybe they're not my type"--or turn out to be the Jekyll & Hyde type. Look out for those!

As I've wandered into middle age alone I've discovered a lot about myself and about the social/dating world. It's not like it used to be, is it?! As I mentioned in another post elsewhere, I've found that I'm too old for the pool of eligible bachelors and too young for the widow's support groups, don't fit in with my married friends very well, and haven't found a niche I fit into.

Until I came here. Boy, it sure is different to actually *find* other people in the same situation!! Thanks to everyone that posts, rants or not ;-) , because your posts help me see I'm not the only single middle-aged person there is, or the only one dealing with these issues. :o)

Hi Marilou....yep there are more of us out there that don't know about this place that are looking for the same type of place....spread the word...I do....I've gotten a few readers but none have signed up yet....maybe me buying a membership for them will be a good early birthday present...hmmmmm

I think I'm one of those "limbo" people... I'm not married but living with my boyfriend who, now I find out has no intention of marrying me. I naively assumed we'd get married after a bit... I was married for 27 years and although we didn't get along, there was something comforting about having a husband. I'm around 50 and feel so stupid introducing people to my "boyfriend". I wish I had the strength to move out. Wish I would have listened to Dr Laura "before" I moved in with my significant other. What forum works for people like me?

Welcome TeriSS...feel free to say whatever you desire here.. I think you will fit in just fine....You're not married so you are thus single so you fit the criteria....you never know, you might get some ideas on here if you are looking for the strength to move out..Ask questions about how others would/or have handled it.

greetings from the pacific northwest....just found this forum....i frequent the northwest forums and landscape forums as well others...nice to see this forum and that there are other singles out there! after 2 marriages i find myself single again at 51! ugh....no kids, just me and my dog, gardening and enjoying everything that i do and what comes to me....looking forward to meeting new friends, near and afar....we're all happening at the same time...it's all good, eh?

hello... I stop in every once in a while, and post on occasion. Mid-30s and always been single (never married, never lived with. Have had a couple long-term dating relationships). Not adamant on staying that way nor desperate to change it. Most recent SO just packed up and moved to europe, though, so it doesn't look like changing my single status is going to happen in the immediate future...
