Red Flags going up..Now what???

My roommate/friend have been in the apartment for 1 wk..I came home Frieday and she tells me her car got repoed...

Then gives me $100 towards the rent but informs me that she'll give me $200 next wk..Rent is 375....she wants to be late on the first payment!!

then she want to take my car to work(we work at the same place but differant shifts) and have someone pick me up and drop me off..I told her Sorry but I don't let anyone drive my car..

I am really thinking of getting out of the lease before she destores my credit.

Help..

I think that is wise - just because you call someone a friend - doesn't mean they are a friend. You might want to re-think what a friend is. Good luck!

Typical deadbeat behavior. The stories and/or situations won't stop. Cut your losses now....but get ready for a huge guilt-trip, probably laced with many accusations.

Jay, I hate to hear there was a fire on your brother-in-law and sister's property, but am glad they didn't lose any structures. It is very unfortunate that they are likely to lose soil to wind erosion in the absence of vegetation to hold it in place. It was horrible here yesterday, but I got up early and got busy cooking, so already had the food prepared before the fire pagers started going off. We only had one fire close to us, and it was on the property behind my gardening friend, Fred's, place. As we were on our way there, I was worried about his house, but the wind carried the fire away from his house, so it all worked out. His whole veggie garden plot is freshly plowed, so it would have served as a pretty good firebreak anyway. The wind was not as bad here as it was further west and northwest. I bet our highest wind gusts were in the upper 30s or lower 40s, but in those winds, fires still can be hard to control. Half of West Texas blew in with the dust storm in late afternoon and that part of it was just awful. We were home by dark, though, so it wasn't nearly as bad of a day as it could have been. Even here in our county, most of the fires were in the northern part of the county and not the southern part where I live. Some VFDs were much busier than we were. Today I have to go outside and gather up lawn furniture that blew around and birdfeeders that got blown down, etc. It was our first Red Flag Fire Warning of the year, and I hope it is a long time before we have another. It is supposed to rain here tomorrow and it if does, that will give us minor fire protection for a few days. Of course, it won't help with dry, dormant vegetation, but with the rain and lots of sunny, warm to hot winter days, we have a lot of green up in the fields already and that helps us a whole lot. I suppose yesterday's wind, extreme fire danger and dust storm reminds us all of what is coming with the strong spring winds. I sure was glad yesterday that it is so early in the season that I didn't have to worry about the wind beating the living daylights out of a garden full of plants. Dawn

Wow, that IS funny, bofletch. Your new kitchen is EXACTLY like our old (current) kitchen, the one we're about to ditch, down to almost every detail: 1) no peninsula -- until I recently cobbled one together out of wire shelving and a piece of butcher block to see how I would like it. Love it. Can chat with husband/guests/ kids while I'm cooking, without cabs or shelves inches from my head (bonus). 2) our fridge is currently where the pantry is in the plan. Never liked how far it was from the cooking area, and we haven't found much use for the counter space that is where the fridge will go, because of its (relative) distance from both the range and the sink... tends to collect clutter 3) we have regular upper cabs now. Already ripped some of them out and put in open shelving. We find that for dishes and cookware shelves are more convenient (accessible) that cupboards, and they are definitely more in our aesthetic. Yes, we'll have to stash unsightly stuff elsewhere, but that's what the pantry is for! Along with the drawers. (It helps that we don't find pots, pans, collanders, etc. unsightly) My husband would agree with you on the prep sink. Clearly my layout doesn't lend itself to one as well as others. Question is whether I'd be happier without one entirely. What I don't like now is washing my vegetables in main sink where dishes (or person washing dishes) are often in the way, then carrying them (dripping) over to the peninsula to chop them. I suppose if I didn't have a prep sink over there I might find the peninsula less useful. I would just prep in the area between the sink and the range. Then again, that peninsula has really proven to be the "sweet spot" for me -- chatting with friends and family while I prep. Curious to know what you have against prep sinks in general...? Despite our different tastes, I'd love to hear what I might be missing... Than ks.

tania, It's really good that you are aware and open to seeing red flags... and the first red flag that pops out at me is that you have ONLY been with this guy 5-6 months & it sounds as if you either live together and/or the kids are allowed to come into your bedroom in the morning, while the two of you are in bed. 6 months may seem like a long time, but in choosing a life partner, especially when you have very young children involved (because they do get attached easily), the parents should get to know each other well before introducing the kids to the situation, let alone them seeing mommy or daddy in bed with someone that isn't their other parent. If things don't work out, they could get confused seeing their parent in bed with various partners until they find "the one". As for him treating the kids with different rules or expectations or standards, that is definitely a red flag. I believe we all bond with OUR own kids from birth so when we say we love or treat a stepchild "as our own", I don't think it's very likely exactly the same. I think we try to treat kids evenly, do for them what we do for ours, try to instill the same values, etc. and try not to show favoritism so in that way, we treat them as we would our own. That being said, it is a red flag for him to expect one thing from his son and something different from your daughter. I wonder if it has to do with HIS vs.YOURS or if it's about the gender of the child. But you have a maternal instinct to know your child needs to be protected, so listen to it. The biggest mistake you could make is staying with someone BECAUSE of the kids, because you don't want to see them be hurt. The best way to prevent that from happening in the future is to re-read my first paragraph & keep your child away from your relationships until you know he's a keeper & you have no doubt. Also, where is your daughter's father? and his son's mother? It's also a red flag to me that you say he works 10 hours a day during the week while you care for his son. Unfortunately, some guys shove off the bulk of parenting on a new girlfriend/wife & eventually you may end up feeling like an unappreciated, unpaid babysitter... especially if he undermines you by having different rules/standards for his son, even though YOU are the primary caretaker. In my opinion, it's also dangerous to pretend you're a nuclear family... where it may be perfectly normal for kids to jump in bed with mom & dad in a nuclear family, I think more caution should be taken, especially with a daughter.

Just some thoughts: Your realtor ... or the seller's realtor? If the realtor represents the seller, seriously rethink skipping the inspection -- and/or hire an inspector that represents YOU. Alternately, if there is electricity connected to the house, at least go in and inspect it yourself -- turn every thing off and on and make sure it works. Look and listen for problems and don't let anyone distract you while you do that ... if they try to distract you, you might want to be suspicious as to why . Do some research and get all the original plat and building specs, etc., you can from the local / county real estate records office and don't forget to talk with your closing attorney about title insurance you can purchase at time of closing. See if any of the available documents raise questions and if they do, ask. Always make informed decisions -- "hoping for the best" is not the best plan. Always read and understand what you're signing ... especially when it involves a major purchase. IF the light switch plate is what is cut, then you could likely remove the light switch cover and look inside the box to which it is attached since the screw to do so is centered beneath the light switch itself. It may well be that the trim board is trimmed to fit over a full light switch plate which would mean removing the trim would be required if there is ever an issue with the switch.

Is the lease in your name? Or both? I think this you're right - this is a HUGE red flag. Good luck!

Hi Cabin...nice to see you back...you're seeing the flags, and I indeed believe they are an omen of things to come, this early in the agreement. I'd run away as fast as I could. I've had one roomy in my near 50 years and it didn't turn out well....never again. I'd rather bite the bullet and survive on my own than have my "space" invaded. I could understand if we were talking a divorce and a 3 or 4 bedroom house where the mortgage was due....maybe...but not for 375 a month. I hope you get this figured out soon, for your sake.

ooooh, this doesn't sound good. General consensus here - bail out while you can, and before you are really stuck. Don't worry about the friendship aspect - it will either be there or not. But either way, you are better off not continuing the roomate situation.

You are very smart not to let her drive your car. I'm not sure you can get out of the lease, but try right away. The landlord may be more accommodating if you do it right away instead of waiting till you owe a lot of rent.

I think everyone is pretty much on the money. Unless you don't mind financially supporting your 'friend', I would confront her now and say you cannot afford to pay her share of the rent and insist she come up with the money. If you got the place, then tell her she has to move because you need to get someone else to help with the rent. These situations are never easy.

This is the start to a typical script from "Judge Judy" or "People's Court".

No doubt in my mind. Run, don't walk and get out of there now.

I got stung way too many times with roommates and business partners both. At least you have the warnings so don't get stung. RUN, DON'T WALK!!

Now, this presupposes that your roomie does NOT pay up. If the money comes in, then you have to abide by the lease. However if broken, and you can get out of it, I think I'd get out of it. But remember if you acquiesce to changes, you could have problems and have to go through an eviction process.

I'm not sure if you're the landlord or what the deal is, but do some research so you don't get hit with an illegal eviction. You wouldn't need that on top of things.
