I had a mat, but the chipmunk who lives in our shrubbery decided to eat it. I don't know where the little beastie put all the mat; he must have welcomed some of his rodent friends over for the feast.

I, like you, currently like the look of grey cabinets but like white as well and I think that long-term I'll be glad that I chose white since grey will probably go out of style (or apparently from what I've learned reading this thread it already has). On the other hand, since you're using IKEA cabinets you could just change the doors out in 5 or 10 years if you get the gray & get tired of it. The floors on the other hand are a lot more work to change. I love the color that you picked but with a large family you will probably have a lot of dirt & a dark floor will show it all. In my last house we refinished the hardwood floors and used a beautiful dark stain. With 4 kids & a dog I regretted that dark stain within a few weeks. The natural oak never showed dirt like the dark stain did.

Update: I purchased a colorful, beautifully embroidered Scalamandré fabric (pillows in progress) and also had pillows made with a calm blue, gray, and taupe Lee Jofa fabric. I put the Matouk pique coverlet on top to bottom, so it has a curved scallop up near the headboard. I may monogram the hemstitched part of the pillowcase, and/or get the pillowcases Mtnrd found. Ordered cordless sconces after getting a crazy quote to install 2 outlet boxes in the hurricane-proof wall. Chiseling a hurricane wall can't be the best idea, and I have high hopes for the cordless which should arrive soon. Thanks to @Jilly for the latest pic, reminding me about centering the sconces. I did that in the mockup below. I love the blue grass cloth mirror in the mockup, but don't love that it doesn't reflect anything interesting, and there will be another mirror over the bachelor chest. Toying with reproducing a watercolor of me and my small (at the time) daughters. But a bit too twee? I think it's a good idea painting the closet doors a crisp white. The blue around the perimeter of the floor space limits your color scheme to blue and white or blue and yellow, so I would look for a nice area rug that you can place on the floor to cover that. I would also check out thrift stores for finds on furniture pieces that can be repainted to suit your tastes. Also, you may be able to find a nice throw, wicker baskets, ornaments, small lamps or even floor lamps there. I have saved a bundle by shopping at thrift stores and refurbishing the pieces. Have you considered a sleep sofa or a futon so that you can pull out the sleeper sofa. Futons are sold at Walmart for about 270 dollars and look nice. An inexpensive way to pull together a really attractive space can be done with paint.
