..interesting reading here.

So what defines a 'relationship'?

Is it physical intimacy? Is the term boyfriend/girlfriend applied after intimacy?

What is it about physical intimacy that fogs the brain?

I think that it easier to maintain 'focus' when one is single.

There are at least 3 kinds of singles that come to mind to me...feel free to add to the list.

1. There are the ones that haven't found a true longterm relationship yet and are still in search of the perfect spouse. (p.s. there aren't many perfect people out there)

2. There are the ones that have been in the longterm relationship and found that they can indeed survive in life without the maintenence of pleasing someone else at the risk of making themselves unhappy. It takes a special person to get this type to change their thoughts and the longer they are single, the more they enjoy it.

3. There are the ones that have been in the longterm relationship and it ended on bad terms and they don't know how to survive alone so they usually doom themselves to other failed attempts out of desparation to not be alone.

I'm sure I am leaving someone out... but those that know me know I am a type 2 person.

Hi Sharon. My yard is small and my main goal is providing host and nectar plants to butterflies since their numbers have dropped 60 % here in FL over the last 20 years (based on annual counts conducted in FL state parks). So function is my garden's top priority. That's not to say I don't pay attention to aesthetics. Since the yard is small and the house has screened porches on the front and back, I decided to continue the color scheme from the porch (front and back the same) out into the garden. I have bronzey colored tile on the porch floor and red cushions on porch seating. I continued those colors into the yard in the pots and trellises I use. (The red trellis, growing a passion vine, is actually a tomato cage from Lowe's. I just train the vine to grow round and round. :) ) I also decided to plant 4 Jatropha (Zebra Longwings love this nectar plant) in a standard form to have a repeating form and color in the garden (red again), and move the color into that mid-height range. They are in between tree height and perennial flower height. So I can plant under them or put a pots around them. I hope these design ideas help. Anna

Stay away from anything lantern shaped or scrolly - too traditional for your cool house! Also stay away from anything that looks like a chandelier! Because your house is very linear with straight lines, I think a large globe pendant would look great. The key is scale. You have a large space so the light should be LARGE. Also a classic Star light would look great. Whatever pendant you decide on, choose the column lights from the same family. Note that the column lights should blend in and not stand out, let the LARGE pendant be the star of the show. One more thing, it looks like you have lion door knockers on your double doors. I would replace them with something more in keeping with the style of your house. Something contemporary and cool. The lions are just too traditional.

And..... it's going to rain tonight. lol I really can't complain, we never get this much rain and we've had more than the area around us as well. I measure rain. We have a really level lot. A lot of trees surrounding our lot in neighbor's yards that suck up the moisture. The tree canopies look better than I can ever remember seeing them. Mature Silver Maples - about 5 of them within 5-10 ft of our lot line. A line of Spruce - 5ft away from our fence - A mature Sycamore, A White Pine and 3 Norway Maples according to a tree person who gave us an estimate for some work this summer. Not trees we would have chosen but what we have. We have loamy clay soil and normally I'm dragging the sprinkler around the yard and I've barely done that 1-2x the whole summer. I've had full rain barrels that I've not needed to use. 50+ inches of rain. We never have standing water. I get one long puddle in a small depression where all the back downspouts empty in a heavy rain, that is basically a mulched walkway that is very compacted and the water does collect there but quickly disappears once the rain stops. And there's no grass there. I tried the screw driver. I didn't notice any noticeable difference the screw driver went in easily everywhere.

I and others get confused with the use of "From" as in 'Four from four" or whatever number quoted, meaning this task has been successful. I would say "Four out of four." I used this particular example when recalling a cave rescue. The person who was at the start of the rescue, when given a report at the finish, thought for a moment that all four children had died. He must have felt shattered until the misunderstanding was explained.

4. the widow/widower.
5. the single parent.

I am in the 4 and 5 category, lost my wife to an impaired driver 10 years ago.And single dad of a 11 year old girl.

This is the situation, it is what it is, life goes on.

So where is there time to be anything but single?

Then, there is the one who has only had 5 men/women in all her/his long life, and one of them just keeps coming back and she/he just keeps believing in him/her ie the one with questionable mentality! Let us not forget the hopeless believer of romance!

it has its quiet moments here Woody and I think that may reflect on somes choices to stay to themselves...I've never seen this board as a reflection of what some that stumble across and see the title and think that it's a place to meet other singles for dating purposes....god knows there are enough sites out there to do that....this is indeed a place for people that are single and discuss the positives and negatives of being such.

There are a lot of good people here and I hope you hang around and keep us posted on how things go with raising your daughter. She is only 11 and let me tell you my friend, you ain't seen nothing yet . I have had people here help me out on making decisions on which way I should go in how to deal with mine as she got older and I appreciate it....bottom line.. there are a lot of years of experience with raising kids and dealing with relationships here....the best of luck to you!
