Pillow forms and pillow zippers: necessary?

I am going to make a large needlepoint panel into a flat cushion or pillow. I have 2 questions. I am debating putting a zipper in. I have other needlepoint pillows (2 were purchased, and have zippers; and one was made for my Mom, without a zipper). But then, I have never washed any of them. They do not really get soiled, just dusty. So why do I need a zipper?

As this is a large panel (19 inches square, though I have not blocked it yet), a pillow form to fit will be expensive. So my second question is: do you need a pillow form if you are not planning to remove the cover? Can you just fill it with fiberfill straight? Or does having one make it easier to stitch the last edge closed, or keep the stuffing better distributed, or some such reason?

If using a pillow form is desirable, is there anything I should know about making my own from muslin and fiberfill? I may need to anyway, unless the size is standard. Thanks for your help.
