Adding earwarmers to an existing hat

I have a couple of fleece hats, one of the "bucket" style, and other like a pillbox, but deep enough to pull down. Neither one keeps my ears warm enough, and I end up either putting earmuffs over them, or an earwarmer under. It looks dumpy as all heck.

I would like to add earflaps in a similar fleece, sewn in, or a scarf-like wrap or tie (not sure what to call it) sewn in, out of a soft jersey fabric, that would also cover the ears. I used to see hats all the time that had that feature.

But I'm not sure how to go about it. Which would look nice, and not weird? If the earflap idea, how do I make it cup around the ear? Otherwise it will just lay over the ear, and not keep the cold out at all.

Thanks!
