Question about the Baptism gown

I just posted in my original post that I'm very critical of my work, so I have a question.

The ONE are where I'm not pleased with this gown is the waist. The heavy satin with the sheer organza made it VERY difficult to gather the waist. My bobbin threads broke 3 times b/c the fabric was so thick. So when I finally got the waist gathered and attached, it seems bunched in a few areas.

Is this just normal b/c of the thickness of the fabric? Or should I have adjust the width of the pattern so I wouldn't have had to gather so much?

There are ways to reduce the width at the top so thick fabric lies better:

1 - Cut the skirt in gores above the embroidery
2 - Make darts at the top, then gather it
