Probably but not necessarily. Some older, all metal, heavy duty machines will work, as long as you can fit it under the foot.
If you do get an industrial, you might want to consider a walking foot machine for things like that.

Use upholstery sewing needles on an all metal machine, mine goes through all kinds of stuff. I use boating upholstery to make aprons. I have also talked to the local shoe repairman and had him order heavy needles for me. (I took him my needle so he could order the style closest to mine, some of his machines are built far different.) l.marie

Good advice above. I have a viking sewing machine and a serger, and a commercial sewing machine too. I use the commercial machine on heavy stuff, the last project being sewing a new bag for a yard walk-behind leaf vacuum. It depends on what fabric you want to sew. I've used the commercial for making a new spa cover, upholstery, awnings, etc. Materials like the leaf bag, spa cover, and awnings I've done, would probably kill my light weight machines. Just my opinion...
