Help with a stitch

Wow, I think this is the first time posting on this forum. Hard to believe that I have overlooked so many of the forums here. I am making a button up scarf with a (sorry, not sure what kind) material. I forgot to wash it before I cut it so I washed it after and a very nice fray was made. I would like to keep the fray around the edges. Is there a stitch I can do around to keep it from fraying even more? I am a beginner at sewing and have undertook about 8 projects this Christmas - I must be crazy. Thanks for your help.

Some people run a line of straight stitching at the edge of the fabric where the fraying begins. I've also seen decorative stitches along the edge (also where the fray begins) - that was done in silver thread on a scarf and also gold thread on another scarf.....some people just do a zig zag close to where the fray begins as well. You have a few options - play around and see which you like best.

Thanks. I did a single line of straight stitch. I guess I could have done it is smaller sections as it is pretty long. The more I do I things I usually start thinking after the first couple of ones.
