1st Drape Project. Can use some help.

Hi,

I am usually a lurker here. I have decided to take the plunge and make my first set of drapes for our guest bedroom. I have made roman shades in the past that came out great but have not sewn for a few years.

Regarding measurements:

The window is 72" wide. The fabric is 54" wide. Do I make the drapes 2 times the width? The fabric is a little on the heavier side but I have been assured by a couple of fabric shoppes they are not too heavy for drapes.

I don't want the drapes to look skimpy. They will be opened most of the time since it will be the only window treatment for that window.

How wide should I make the drapes past the window? I would like them to be a little wider than the window. Is there a rule of thumb?

These will be just plain panels. I am planning on using rings to hang them.

What is in fashion regarding length to the floor?

The room is going to be very tailored and on the contemporary side of things.

Is there an book I can purchase with easy instructions that anyone can recommend?

Thanks
