Help with old Kenmore machine

My MIL has lent me an old Kenmore sewing machine because mine is broken (she's giving me one of her mother's old machines, but I have to wait until we get up to GMIL's old house to get it and I need to get my son's Halloween costume done by the 16th). I have no idea what model number it is (I've looked all over and I can't find it), but the motor is model #5151. It's light green and you load the bobbin from the left side instead of from the top or from the front. My trouble is, I can't figure out how to make long stitches. I need to easestitch and gather (making a pirate shirt) and all I've figured out how to do is make really short stitches and very, very tiny stitches. (well, I've figured out zig-zag and that weird three straight stitches then a zig-zag thing, too, but I don't need those). Can anybody help me or point me in the right direction to figure this out?
