Sewing Help

I'm very new at sewing and have encountered a problem. You know the circular object on the right of the machine you use to go over a stich to secure it at the beginning? It is not working. Basically it "sews" and moves the fabric but as the needle penetrates, it does not sew.I have re-threaded the machine and the pedal works just fine. How can I resolve this? All responses will be much appreciated!

I'm not sure what you are talking about!! Is there someway you can post a picture of your machine?? The only thing i can think of that you may be speaking of is the reverse knob/button.
What kind of machine is it,maybe i can look it up on the computor if you can't do a picture.

I changed the width of the stitch and it mysteriously fixed itself. Thanks for your response :)
