It is very hard to try to explain to you how to do it with out pictures. So I would suggest to google roman shades and go from there. But with the mounting board you need a piece of 1" X 2" board. You can either screw it into the window frame or use peel and stick velcro. (let sit for 24 hrs. before putting together).

Thank you Bonnie. Do I definitely need to use a mounting board/headrail? I was hoping that I could just hang the shades on a rod, using the rod pocket, and then screw the pulley hardware into the wooden part of the window frame in the right position. Is this not possible?

Yes, if I do need to do the headrail, I did find a few pages online that describe how to do this.

We just hung roman shades in our bedroom. They were bought with the rings and pulls already on them. We hung them on decorative rods and they work just fine.

Hate to be a party poop, but hanging the Roman shade with the pulley system in a 3 year olds bedroom is NOT a good idea. Choking hazard. Instead, you can attach very large buttons to the front of the shade, and then make loops with ribbon. then when you want the shade open, you just loop the ribbon loops over the buttons. It's what I did for my grandson and works quite well. Wish I had a picture.
