Do I have to line my curtains?

I'm making curtains out of a patterned linen fabric that will have a banding of a lightweight burlap-type fabric (though more refined). I placing these in my country kitchen on either side of the sliding door. They will be a basic flat panel hooked to rings.

I'm debating whether I need to line them or not. I have always lined curtains, but since I'm going for a more casual look and the linen fabric has a bit more weight to it than the usual linen, and there is a pattern to it... I just don't know. I don't want it to be too heavy. Privacy not an issue and these would be stationary panels, majority of which would be against the wall, not in front of the window.

Thoughts????

How much sun comes through the windows, and what kind of glass are they? The lining can be made of UV-resistant fabric so the drapes don't get "sun-rot".

I'd rather line now than have good linen drapes crumble in a couple of years.

I love that fabric and it will go well with your beautiful home : )

You say these panels will be stationary and mostly be against the wall. Not lining them will keep the light, casual look you are going for. If you line them, they will probably last longer (as lazygardens said) depending on how much sun shines through onto the portion that will be near or partially covering the window.

Whichever you decide to do, I think they will look great. Post pictures when you are finished!
