Fabric bunching on old Singer

mwhidden

I have a 1920's Singer 66 that I've cleaned and lubricated, which generally runs wonderfully, both by treadle and electric motor. Except...

When sewing, if I do not grab the far end of the fabric and pull it quite firmly out the back of the machine, the fabric comes out "bunched". Almost as though it were ruffled, but not quite. It seems that between each stitch there is a little bit more than a stitch-length's-worth of fabric, if that makes sense.

Any ideas why this happens and how to fix it? I'm a beginner at sewing. As far as I can tell, the tensions are balanced bobbin vs. top thread. Could it be the type of fabric? The type of thread? Wrong thread for the fabric? Something wrong with the foot or the feed dog?

Thank you in advance!
