sewing machine belt problem

I have inherited a Kenmore model 1650 , probably from the 60-70 era. I just turned it on for the first time in decades and everything moves, except for the belt. It is the orange cog type belt. When i press the foot pedal the motor runs but the belt doesn't move. Do you think it just needs a new belt?
Thanks for any thoughts on this..about to embark on an important sewing project.

RE: sewing machine belt problem

Did you try moving the belt manually,it just may be siezed from drying out and lack of oil. I would oil the entire machine. If it's sat for that long without use it will need it. Do you have a manual that shows you how and where to oil it?. Use a sewing machine oil.

If you don't have a manual you may be able to get one from sears.

After you oil it and everything is working, Stick a scrap of material under the pressure foot and run it a while--no needle or thread-- to get the oil all through it and the scrap will soak up the excess oil.

You may have to take it in for servicing and maybe the belt is rotten and you'll need a belt change--I don't know-- but try this first

RE: sewing machine belt problem

Thank you, oilmaker. we decided to take it to an expert and have it serviced. It definately needed a new belt and fortunately they are able to fit a belt, clean it and get it all set up . Can't wait to use it as I have a special christening dress to make.
Thanks again

RE: sewing machine belt problem

Lovely--A very special project!!!
I made my son's christening dress and when his twin sons were christened one wore the one I made for my son and one wore the one that their mother's grandmother had made. Now they are put away to hand down again.

It was so nice to know I had made an heirloom
