Question on making handbags
| | |

| I just bought a pattern yesterday for a purse: Simplicity 3822. It's recommends using needlepoint canvas at the bottom. Any other suggestions? I've heard that canvas rips easily after the purse is used for a while. |

| One more question--It's a quilted purse and they suggest using polar fleece, but wouldn't 80/20, Cotton polyester be better? That's what I've used in the past. |

| Canvas comes in different weights. They are probably talking about heavy weight canvas. You can use any heavy weight fabric even denim. If you scotchguard it before you cut and sew it stains will wipe off and water will bead. Yes use poly cotton instead of fleece. Fleece seems a rather odd choice for lining a purse. Things would get caught in fleece. I think they might have wanted a heavier fabric to line tapestry. |

Hope this isn't too late for you, but I have that pattern and like most handbag patterns, the needlepoint canvas they are talking about is the plastic kind with holes in it. You can get it at craft stores, Joanns, Hobby Lobby, Walmart, most any place they sell craft items. You cut a piece of the plastic canvas to make a bottom for your bag so it will hold its shape better, sit straight, and make it easier to see what is in there. I make a fabric sleeve to match the lining, slip the plastic canvas in it and lay in bottom of purse after it is completely made. Then if you make another one, just take the plastic out and reuse in your new purse. Hope this makes sense. Murphy |
