I would add one additional step at the end: paint clear nail polish over the stitches on the backside. This will ensure that the thread will never unravel again.

I used to find I had to do this with my husband's shirts due to frequently losing buttons. Now I do it to all the buttons automatically before the first wearing for prevention.

Another trick I usually do: once you have sewn on the button but before you have secured and cut the thread, wind the thread several times around the stitches underneath the top of the button, insert the needle into the fabric from the top and run it about an inch or so before bringing it up to the top again and snipping it close to the surface of the fabric.

To make it stay on even better you can sew on a very small button on the back side of the button also. I first sew on the button used for closure fully then sew on the small button going trough the holes of the "main" button and the small button. This helps especially when the fabric area where you sew on is weakened from buttons being pulled off.

I like buttons with holes instead of buttons with shanks, so I can use my sewing machine to sew them on. Then I add a dab of Fray Check to the back. Yes.....I do hate handwork.

I also use the sewing machine to sew on buttons. Takes less time than getting out the needle and thread for hand work. I drop the feed dogs, drop the presser foot to hold button in place, use a zig-zag setting for width of holes, and just sew it on. Less than a minute. I haven't ever had a machine sewed button come off, even without nail polish or Fray check.
