Chinese brocade---curing?

My husband got to travel in western China recently, and he brought me yards and yards of gorgeous brocade. He says that the sales person said "something" about curing the brocade in cold water before using it. I'm baffled. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

That was pure bull! Just start sewing with it! My friend goes to China on a regular basis and brings me back the same stuff.

Could there be a language barrier issue and you are being told to just rinse to ensure the dye doesn't bleed out?
