Need idea for making a small travel neck roll

I am hoping someone can give me a wonderful idea. Here's my situation. I commute by bus to work from a rural area into another city 50 miles away, and the seat headrest on the bus is up so darn high, you have to be 5'10 in order to benefit from it. So, given that, it leaves me with a pain in the neck and restless.

I purchased a travel pillow from eBay. I absolutely love it, and use it at home because it takes up too much room in my tote bag, leaving me with yet one more bag to carry if I opt to take it with me. Then I bought a cheap inflatable pillow that takes up no room at all, but all of your breath just to inflate it and it isn't worth it to deflate it since I am traveling by bus twice per day.

I an an experienced seamstress, have sewing machine, but need something that is small and only supports the back of my neck and will fit into my tote bag that contains my lunch and other necessary items, so I don't have to carry another bag on top of that. Any ideas? What could I purchase that is already round and narrow that I could fill with beads or fiber fill that isn't a tube sock. At home I would not mind, but clad in my career clothes, I will not be seen in public with anything that resembles a sock.

I'd sew up my own tube from some nice soft fleece or a similar fabric, then fill it with styrofoam beads. It would be lightweight and do the trick. I had a neck roll filled with these and it was wonderful.

I agree with Annie,maybe just a 6" tube since you just need it for your neck.I have one of those aromatherapy ones shaped like a U and i love it.I'm using it now in my car to keep the seatbelt from rubbing against my chest,since i had the bilateral mastectomy.

I like your ideas, Annie and Kathi. I will have to get to this asap before I am in too much pain. I think this will do the trick and fit into my work bag without taking up too much room. Not to mention I can buy a remnant fat quarter for almost nothing. I have a Michael's in the small town I live in, so hopefully they will have styrofoam beads.

I got thinking that if you can't get styrofoam beads that you could probably make do with plastic ones, a bit heavier, but still pretty light.

Have you seen what they call a "dogbone"? It is basically 4 pieces about 6-8 inches long shaped like a bone. It's skinny in the middle & fatter on the end. I would guess at 1 1/2-2" in the middle & 3-3 1/2" on each end. Tiny seams with a space left open for turning & filling & hand sew the opening once stuffed.

You may be able to find a pattern to get it exact.

I have a squishy neck roll pillow from WalMart that's made from spandex filled with styrofoam beads that I use when we travel. It's light weight.

Make a neck roll using a hand towel rolled up, fastened at each end with rubber bands/ribbon. It is perfect to fill in the space behind the neck when seat backs are too high.

Easy to stuff in a tote bag, easy to take loose and launder.

I finally made one for my Lazy Boy Recliner. Could not find anything the right thickness until I tried a rolled up towel.
