Need fabric source

I'm making my granddaughter (due in October) a christening gown. I'm looking for batiste, organza or chiffon with a medium sized scalloped embroidered or lace border.

I've been searching fabric sources on the web and coming up short. Most have all-over embroidered designs or very narrow straight lace edges.

In the past I made the trip to the fabric center of NYC to buy this kind of fabric. I'm hoping to find something I like on line this time.

Any suggestions?

Dian, do they make fabric with the edging like that? It looks like something added on. If you don't get any answers here you might try the Marth Pullen forums - there are lots of heirloom sewing experts there who could probably answer your questions. You might even try Martha's website - she may sell stuff like that, or have a link to someone who does.

Thanks for the replies and the sites. Didn't even consider ebay--great idea!
I'll keep looking and if you stumble across any, I'd appreciate a heads-up.

When i worked in a fabric shop we sold trim just like that in the bridal dept.I've never seen the fabric with that kind of trim on it already though.Everything had to be purchased separately.

Kathy, in the fabric center there is store after store that carry these fabrics already made up. It's incredible and difficult to choose just one. And you have to haggle the price, it's part of the experience.

Talk about eye candy, Jenni, especially that cheeptrims site. Thanks for helping, I really appreciate it.

Well, holy smokes.

I just returned from Joann Fabrics and took a look around their bridal section. The only organza with embroidered trim they had in stock was (sit down) $39.99/yard. Even with the 40% off coupon it was just too much.

Then I noticed some special order fabric samples hanging on a rack. Up to $69.99/yard. DH raises an eyebrow and asks, "How much to just buy a dress?"

He just doesn't get the point of creating an heirloom. Well, at those prices I have to question it, too.

Manhattan's looking better and better to me.
