My friend is just beginning sewing and has no experience. She wants to do home dec items---pillows, curtains, etc. She's asking me about this Brothers machine at Costco but I'm not familiar with all the different brands, etc. Is this a good buy or would you recommend another machine at this price?? TIA!

When you buy a machine it is always a good idea to try it out first. You wouldn't buy a car without a test drive. You have to feel comfortable with the machine. The trouble with buying from a big warehouse store is that you can't try it out before you buy it. Colleen

I use a brother 2600i and i love it. It is inexpensive (about $120) and has all the features you need to get started and do basic sewing. She can use it for a while and decide if sewing is for her or not and then in a while she can buy a $5000 viking machine if she wants something 'better'. YMMV.
