How to Wash Linen Upholstery?

Hi. This is my first post on this forum, so please forgive the intrusion. I know nothing about sewing or fabrics, and can't find an answer to my question on the internet, so thought that maybe sewing experts would have the fabric knowledge required. . . . I recently purchased an antique chair that was reupholstered in linen about 5 years ago by the previous owner. In general, the chair is very clean. The seat is dirty, but I can zip it off and have it drycleaned. The problem at hand is the fabric on the arms. I've been told that I can just take a white washcloth and, with mild soap, just clean it myself. Will this work? If so, how would I rinse out the soap?
