repair polyurethane jacket

I have a polyurethane-coated jacket that I would like to repair. The polyurethane coating is deteriorating along the stitching lines. I thought about using iron-on interfacing beneath the damaged areas. I am afraid that the heat from the iron would damage the polyurethane.

Has anyone successfully repaired a polyurethane-coated item?

I'd be afraid that any heat on it would melt it...
