joining ends of cordedge

I am making a doctoral gown and I plan to highlight the velvet using piping (cordedge). No problem for the front velvet panels, I can do that in one continuous piece. The chevrons on the the sleeves are the issue. I don't know how to join the ends of the trim! Turning it under or overlapping would make it too bulky. To make matters worse, the cord is a twisted cord which would tend to unravel.

I would love to hear any ideas. . . I came up with a possibility just now while thinking about it. Will have to experiment a bit and see if it will work! In the meantime, I would be delighted to hear about tried-and-true methods.

TIA,

Julie
