Novice Needs Help Making Bedskirt

| I have a kingsize bed with a headboard and footboard. I bought a new comforter, but it didn't come with bedskirt and I haven't found a pre-made one that matches in color. I have found some 45" fabric that I would like to use to make a bedskirt.
I've googled for hours and can't find instructions to make a pleated bedskirt for use with a footboard. I understand how to make the pleats along the sides and one in the middle of the bottom/foot. I do not understand how to make the pleats at the corner and how to make a cut so that the footboard can be accommodated w/o showing through. Since I'll need to hem both sides of the cut I'd think I would need extra fabric but I'm at a loss as to know how to add it and even where to cut. (I'm not good at visualizing in 3D.)
I would like to have the "pretty fabric" go under the mattress a short way so that the white fabric doesn't show as they always seems a way to. I'd be happy too to attach the skirt to a fitted sheet or use Velcro if that helps.
Since the fabric is not the heavy home décor fabric, do I need to line it?
The closest instructions I've found are at: http://sewing.about.com/library/weekly/aa022699.htm.
Can someone clear the muddy waters for me?

| Dear Artesan, I wish I knew how to explain this. I also am ready to tackle the same issue. Though I do not want to sew my bedskirt to a sheet, I just want to attach velcro to the mattress and attach the skirt there. I am hoping that will keep the bedskirt from sliding around and looking messy. I am also looking for a way to make pillow shams out of the matching fabric. I have no idea how to go about this. I will be making my own post so not to disturb yours. I hope someone comes along with the idea soon. Good Luck! |

Hi...I also plan to do the same project. I have never done this either but I have a "PLAN". LOL Although I don't have a footboard, this is my plan. Make the skirt in three pieces, two sides and the end. When you get to the end of the side, allow a little extra and leave the skirt open from the mattress down. Not sure how to explain this, but it should attach at the top of the boxspring and be open to to the floor to accomodate the footboard. then attach the end piece to the side piece overlapping just a little so that it hangs straight at the footboard. Be sure to allow for a small hem on the sides that hang down. I plan to attach mine with velcro. I already have a bedskirt on the bed and will just sew the velcro onto the bedskirt already there, sew the other side of the velcro to the new skirt, attach and admire my work. :) Hope this helps and gives you an idea of what to do. I too look forward to any other ideas that more experienced people may offer. Murphy |

| Murphy, this sounds like a great idea. It gives me ideas on how to work this out. I have not thought of making 3 seperate peices, smart idea! I don't think I am going to attach mine to existing bedskirt, they just slide around too much and stay uneven. Going to stick with original idea of attaching velcro to box spring! Now I just have to find time to get this project done. |

Hapy: How are you going to attach velcro to box spring? Stitch, glue, sticky velcro? I have my velcro but it is not the sticky back kind. Looking for ideas on how to attach to box spring. I was going to sew to my existing skirt. Like you, have to get fabric for mine and take time to get done. |

| You can buy thumbtacks with little spirals on the ends. They can be used to tack/screw your bedskirt directly to the boxspring, avoiding the use of Velcro. I used them for years before finally making a platform type skirt, the kind attached to a sheet. Dianne |

| Based on previous experiences, I found that the adhesive velcro would not stay attached to the box springs, and was continually falling off. This was on a bed in our guest room, too, that received very little use. I also tried the velcro that you attach with heat pressure, and that wouldn't stick for long either. It was always the piece of velcro that was on the box spring side that would fall off. I ended up using velcro that you could sew on, and sewed that strip onto an existing fitted sheet that slipped over the box springs. Problem solved!! |

| I staple the hook and loop tape to the box spring. Just use long staples. |

I know it has been a long time since this thread was "up". I just finished, at last, my bedskirt and it is great. This is what I did. I took the current bedskirt off the bed. Sewed one side of the velcro to the skirt about an inch in from where the flat white fabric part meets the fashion fabric. I measured and cut my new fabric into three pieces, two sides and the end. I sewed the other piece of velcro along the top edge of all three pieces. Hemmed the bottom, it actually reaches to the floor now, :) and to finish the corners because the pieces wouldn't wrap properly, I cut another piece wide enough to cover the corner, velcroed it in place and voila... a new bedskirt. If I decide to change my quilt, I can simply sew another matching skirt, stitch some velcro to it and replace. It looks great, the white part of the bedskirt doesn't show, and has not moved in the two weeks it has been on the bed. Just thought I would update in case you other ladies were still thinking about what to do with this problem. Love this forum!! Murphy |

| Some really good ideas here. Sure makes it sound easy. I have 2 beds in our cabin that I bought new quilts for and want to put some bedskirts with them. I now know how to do it. Thanks ladies.. It is so nice when we can share out ways of doing things. Susie |

| I used a used fitted sheet to make mine. I put the fitted sheet over the box spring just as though it were a mattress and I smoothed it out and tucked it in so it fitted tightly. I had a bit of trouble keeping it tight. If you do have a bedskirt I second murphy's idea of using that. But here's how I made my pleated bedskirt. I took 5 meters of fabric and cut it in half. I measured the box spring and divided it by the number of pleats I wanted. In my case the box spring was 80x60, so I made 8- 10 inch pleats along the side and 6-10 inch pleats on the end. I allowed 4 inches to fold back for the pleat. I left a little extra at the head end to fudge with if it wasn't enough and the corner fold back for the pleat is a little larger--2 inches--fudge factor. Then I began marking on one piece, I used a pencil to mark on the edge. Leaving the end unhemmed, I left 4 inches then measured 2 inches, then 10, then 1, then 2, then 1, then back to 10 continue with 1,2,1,10 until you have 8-10 inch pleats marked This is the corner so mark 2,2,2. and continue on the foot as far as you can with the 10,1,2,1, ending after the first 1 and pin the sew on the second piece after the first 1 -- you will have to add a seam allowance. This puts the seam at the far side of the pleat and it won't be seen. mark the second corner as the first and continue around. You should have 8 pleats on the side and 6 on the end. Pleat them by bringing the 2 10's together and folding the 1's and 2's behind to make a box pleat run a basting stitch across the pleats to keep them in place while you pin to the sheet. Now pin to the sheet or other skirt fla. When you get to the corner fudge it to get a nice falling pleat then continue around arrange the part by the headboard and sew it on and put back on the bed and pin and sew hem |

Oilpainter, I had not thought of pleats or gathers....I was so intent on getting one on there lol. With your instructions, thank you very much, the next one I make may have pleats or at least gathers. Although I would measure and try to sew that hem before I put it back on the bed. Much easier than trying to sew a hem while it is on the bed. I did sew my hem before putting back on bed. Just measured and ran a "wobble" stitch with the machine to kinda hide the stitches. Murphy |

Whoa murphy: I didn't mean to sew it on the bed but to put it on mark the excess and to pin the hem. That way you have an even hem. You may have gone up or down a bit to get nice laying pleats so this way everything is even. Then take it off to sew the hem. |
