Machine for new user

Hi guys, I have a little question to ask, and I'd appreciate any help from those of you who have way more experience than me.

I would like to take up sewing so that I can custumise jeans and shirts for my own wear. the types of alterations I am talking about are some nice stiching designs on collars and hems, and be able to sew buttons, and other accessories like pockets and stuff on them. The thing is though, I have no experience at all at sewing. I will be getting lessons in the near future. I cant afford to spend a fortune either, and I was wondering if you guys could reccommend a good sewing machine, able to do things like zig-zag stiching, and double stiching for two colour threads at the same time.

I am a complete novice, but I am looking forward to picking up a new skill and any help would be very welcome.

So if you know of a good sewing machine for a beginner, please please please let me know.

My first advice would be to read some of the older postings about purchasing a machine. Go to the bottom of the first page and where you see "search" type in "new machine" or advice about sewing machines" something along that line. I personally don't know how to advise you on which machine to purchase. Go to a dealer and describe what you what to be able to do...double stitching can be accomplished with "a twin needle" so be sure to ask for that. You want to have a variety of fancy stitches it seems so mention that. Don't buy the first machine you see, test drive all of them, make sure it comes from a reputable shop and check the warrenty. Some kind of lessons should also be provided and don't forget to look at machines that are trade ins....some great deals can be found. Good luck in your search.
