It is quite the misconception to think that any industrial or commercial machine can "sew everything". Indies are VERY specialized compared to home machines, and come in a huge variety of types, designed for very specific uses. If you get one that can plough through leather or canvas, it will be totally unsuitable for fine fabrics. You are correct that industrials can often be cheaper than home machines, but you have to be very careful to choose the correct one for the type of work you plan to do.

Sailrite is a great company. They do have some nice machines. Call them up and tell them the type of sewing you want to do. Sometimes, in order to sew fine fabrics on an industrial machine that is set up for heavy work, all you need to do is swap out the feed dogs for a set with finer teeth. Maybe they offer the option. Can't hurt to ask.
If I found either a Sailrite or a Thompson, used, at a good price I'd snag it up.
