Fire Place Cushion

I'm a novice sewing and find myself faced with the some what daunting task of needing to make a cushion for our fire place. I have several ideas on how I want to do this but I think that a pillow style cushion will be easiest. How much extra on each side do I need to allow for the filling so that the cushion will still go to the edges of the hearth?

Are you going to use batting or foam for the cushion? If foam, how thick of foam are you going to use?
