Jeans are hard for most machines to handle. My suggestion is to try both out. That is the best way to buy any sewing machine. If you can't try Walmarts out look up your singer dealer. Take a piece of jeans material with you when you go

The lower end Singers tend not to get very good reviews. Baby Locks are generally much better value for money and their warranty is the best in the business. I have seen several good reviews for the BL9.

Another machine that gets very good reviews, but is smaller and with fewer stitch options than the BL9, is the Kenmore Mini Ultra (made by Janome) - shown online on one page as being on sale for $79.99. Several people have reported that it does a very good job of sewing multiple layers of denim, and some Sears stores will allow you to try out their machines. All the Janome made Kenmores are good values and it might be worth asking if there are going to be any special sales coming up soon.

Buying from a dealer gives you the added benefit of being able to trade up at a later date, often with full credit being given for your old machine within a certain time period. Check to see what your particular dealer's policy is and try to get it in writing. Most dealers also offer free lessons, if needed.
