Entry level sewing machine question

Hello all.

My daughter (college age) had taken an apparel design class at our technology school a couple years ago. She loves sewing and has asked for a sewing machine for her birthday.

I went with her to look at some machines and the sales people showed us Baby Loc "Natalie" which is a closeout now, so the price is lower, and Janome. I think it was called "My style 100."

I know some might say it depends on how much I want to spend, but there is also the fact that she will most likely be making "fun" things, and does not need a very expensive machine. My budget is $300 for a decent machine, if this helps.

What do you all know about these two machines, and which would be considered better? I don't know a thing about either of these machines, seeing that all I grew up around were Singer machines!

I don't know anything about those two machines,just mostly Singers, but I would not buy her a new one since she will only be making "fun " things. I would buy a older Singer machine made before the 1970s.
I have a Singer 403 [1960s]. It has cams for some fancy stitches, which I never use. I only use the zig zag stitch.
Most of the time I use my OLD Singer 201 straight stitch for which I would never part with.
You can find these machines for far less than 300.00. Check out your local sewing machine shops, ebay or Craigslist. Of course this is only my suggestion. Good luck. Philanna

Thank you! Her birthday is tomorrow so I have decided to go with the Baby Loc. I'm getting a good price on it ($138) regular price was $200, so I think it's a good deal, plus she gets to take some lessons for free on how to use it. I am buying from a sewing machine shop.
