A lot of fabric made specifically for sheers is made to be railroaded. It is usually extra wide. I also have limited experience working with sheers, but most is made out of polyester and it's difficult to press a crease into it.

Double hems. If you turn back 1/4 or 1/2, it shows through.

When I make sheers I finish with a deep double hem and cover the stitching with soutache braid for a custom look. Depending on the window treatment, I will make the braid line straight or scalloped. It's a nice finished look.

Walmart sells sheers fabric for 1.50 a yard. I use a soluable stabilizer, let it dry and iron the hem before I even attempt to sew. The stitches come out perfect.
