Did I get a bargain?

Hi! I'm Mary and I'm new to the sewing forum here.

I picked up a Kenmore 1966 model 1422 sewing machine for $20.00 at a thrift store last month. I guess it's a portable machine. It came with a zig-zag presser foot and what looks like the original manual. Looks like it was hardly ever used and so far, it's working just fine.

I was an avid seamstress (Is that the word?) back in high school and into my early twenties and now I'm getting back to it after these 25 years.

We do have a c1965 Singer Touch and Sew with cabinet, but I think this works better!

Now I'm taking on a big project---an evening gown! I may be needing some advice! : )

Congratulations on such a good find,and welcome back to the sewing world,and welcome to the board.

This board is not very busy but there are a few of us that check in almost every day.

Be sure to also check out the quilt forum and the Kitchen Table on this website.

Kitchen table is fast paced and has a lot of good information about a lot of subjects and a wonderful bunch of folks.

Sounds like a great deal. Did a manual come with it? If not, you can purchase one from several internet resources:

The second site is less expensive - after paying you download the manual in pdf format.

I'd give it a good cleaning (you probably already have), an oiling (most older machine need regular oiling with sewing machine oil), and a fresh needle.
