The right machine for the job

Greetings:

Help! The more I research the more confussed I get!

I'm trying to purchase a no frills / can be ugly strong sewing machine to sew up my dog beds with. The heavier threads just don't work on my Mom's old machines. I want to sew covers for pipe beds using outdoors fabric for chairs. Bought it at a patio store. The dog beds are made from old blankets etc. I cover them with just about anything I can lay my hands on as the dogs are hard on them from scratching and digging.

I'm looking at some re-conditioned machines on ebay. They are older Toyota models etc. They have all metal gears and seem to be made to sew tuff stuff. ( I'm guily of trying to sew things that are two thick) Is this the way to go?

Also, I've seen some thread called #69. Is this what I should be using when I aquire the new to me machine?

Sure wish my Mom was still here to boss me in the right direction as she could sew and make anything.

Once again, nothing fancy, a straight stitch and wide open works for me!!!!

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

My old dogs thank you!
