boat cushions

Greetings,

I'm sewing cushion covers for my boat. They have that cord that runs around the edges and zippers. So far they are turning out good, not excellent, not professional but acceptable which is fine by me. My problem is the boxing on the side of the cushion that faces the hull of the boat. The foam is 3 inches thick and the hull of the boat is curved so what happens is the foam is cut at about a 45 degree angle allowing the cushion to fit snugly against the hull. The problem I'm having is the transition of the boxing from 4 inches to about 6 inches and keeping that area smooth and neat. I did one cushion so far that has this 4 to 6 inch change. I ended up stuffing the excess materiel under the flap that covers end of the zipper. Any ideas on this?
