...do you use an alternative lettering system?

I really, really, really do not like my writing style.

Is there a labeler, say, that will give you a few different font styles to choose from? I'm thinking that'd make the job a lot easier!

Does anybody have an electronic labeler that has changeable fonts on it?

For journaling, I just use my computer.

For titles, I use a variety of things - sticker letters (not so much anymore, but occasionally), rub on letters, Quickutz die cutting system or my Wishblade cutter.

I have made a few batches of the pickles and they were good. I have also changed up the ingredients a touch with some interesting results. Less salt, add some sugar, celery seed, add jalapeno or serrano, less vinegar,pinch of tumeric, etc. Many possibilities and I just keep notes to what I like and dont like. Very fresh dill is a must here as anything less gives you undesirable results. I personally didnt care for the batch that I made with allspice so I have left it out of future batches. If you do use a hot pepper, be careful how much you use or you wont find anyone willing to help you eat them. I like hot and spicy but most dont care for it. I am currently collecting quart jars so I can make smaller batches with different variations until I find one that everyone likes. Duane

Sorry....I can see the scenario....your MIL has been talking non stop about the new grandchild...to these friends you don't know....so they brought over gifts to her for her new grandchild.....theyw eren't thinking of you at all, these were gifts for her grandchild. And, naturally they wanted to see her reaction to the wonderful things they brought, so told her to open them, and she did. Then of course brought them to you. She thanked the giver, because of course they were really for her grand child, and thinks that's all that's necessary. But if it were me, I would write them a note saying how thoughtful they were to send a gift, and mention how thrilled Grandma was and delighted when she bropught them over. I am sure they won't expect a thank you....but it's the nice thing to do....and don't worry about who sent what, just mention a baby gift. And remember.....these were first of all gifts for your inlaw's new grand child, not necessarily your baby. Linda C

If you don't oil your soapstone...

We have soapstone countertops that is not honed and not oiled. Honing or polishing is the bigger issue with regards to "staining". Soapstone is very nonporous, so the oil stains cannot be soaked into the stone. However, depending on how polished the surface is, there are microvalleys (ie scratches) that will collect oil and thereby stain (this is no different than oil or wax on wood -- the oil/wax just levels up the valleys, making them a even darker "wet" hue. ) The less honed/polished surfaces has that lighter, drier look because the scratches reflect and scatter light. We like the blue-gray look of the unhoned, unoiled surface. But that being said, it is more susceptible to oil rings and spots. (Note that oiling or waxing doesn't remove or prevent these "stains" as much as staining the rest of the counter to match) HAVING SAID THAT: HERE"S THE SOLUTION: Baking Soda. Spray cleaning solution to wet then sprinkle baking soda generously on it -- spray the stain around only because if you spray a large area, it will all turn dark and you wont know where the stain was anymore! Let stand 10-15 minutes -- the wait is important because you are pretty much using the baking soda to wick and lift the oil out, then using a damp cloth (I use a microfiber cloth) scrub the baking soda paste around. Wipe off paste, rinse with clean damp cloth, wipe dry.

After not having a dishwasher for the first 28years of my life and spending 30+ minutes a day doing dishes (I cook a lot), I have been using my new dishwasher for 2 months and hope to never go without one again!! I am slightly confused about people's comments about the water/ice dispensers in fridges. Most of the standard fridge/freezers we looked at came w/ the dispensers, I feel like saying you don't want them would limit your options and/or cause you to buy a more expensive fridge (like the counter depth ones). Assuming you are getting a new one instead of an older one on craigslist etc. We did a lot of fancy custom things in our kitchen, but since we did a lot DIY we saved a lot of money. Some of the money saving choices we made were vinyl flooring (love this for comfort anyway), partially making our own cabinets, installing everything ourselves, getting a common granite (uba tuba), tiling our backsplash ourselves, and our island pendant lights. Some of our splurges were appliances (mainly- our 48" capital range), cabinet hardware, and lots of drawers, backsplash tile (although the tile we chose was reasonable, it was still more expensive than a painted wall), and stone underneath the island seating. I love seeing the choices different people make while still meeting their budget goals! :-)

I do the same as Steph - use the computer for journaling and for titles, etc., I use rub ons or my Wishblade. Of course you'll have the purists who say that journaling HAS to be done in your own handwriting, but I say hog wash. I'd rather it be readable. There's a group of us at work that scrapbook and we have lunch together once a month. One of my friends does all of her journaling by hand and someone was trying to read it and she kept having to interpret because her handwriting isn't readable. What's the point?! I do write a few things in my own handwriting - like under a picture of me holding my grandson, I'll put "Nana and Collin - July 3, 2005" but that's about it. The important part is just to DO the journaling, be it your own handwriting or by computer.

The computer is always good for journaling but remember that future generations will be curious about you and your handwriting is a part of YOU!

I really print well but the thin pens make my writing look not so nice. I took the pens that have the flat edge that makes your printing look like caligraphy. WOW, makes my printing look fabulous. Maybe that would work for you.

I agree that it is your handwriting that viewers will want to see. Try some different pens.
