Why 12X12 ?

I have yet to start scrapbooking. I have collected paper items from all of my travels, and have photos etc. I have looked at scrapbook material and have noticed most all of the paper is in 12X12. Why is this? Why not 8X10? If you scrapbook, do you use 12X12 and do you like it, or do you cut down the paper you use to 8X10? Also what kind of organizer do you put your paper in IE: Do you have special scrapbooks or do you use binders or what? Thanks

I use 12x12. I dont care for 8x10 because by the time you add embellishments, thre really isnt alot of room for your photos. It's hard to even get 2 photos side by side with only 8".

I store my paper in Cropper Hopper paper organizers. They're sturdy and they have a few different options of organizers to choose from. They have really good products.

For our new house master I'm using a fantastic honed marble look-alike porcelain tile, 16x16, and I'll tell you why. Last house we did an extensive master bath remodel with three different kinds of white marble. It was amazing and the complements were off the charts. I loved how it looked but I *hated* how it lived. I had water etching all over the place, even after sealing three times. Honed will help with that I think, but I believe even honed will etch. Honed also isn't as stain resistant, so you have to think about that, too. And it was indeed slick and we had to have rugs everywhere. Honed might help with that. But the tile we're using is an amazing replication of a honed marble, and I'm picky (won't even consider the marble-look solid surface counters because they're not realistic). Or you could find a granite look-alike tile. As I'm out there looking for granite for the kitchen I keep seeing all this gorgeous marble and lots of different opinions from granite suppliers and fabricators on using it in a kitchen, mostly negative. It tempts me every time. I absolutely love the stuff. And I'll never use it for a practical application again.

How much should I be paying, and is there a quality-related reason for the difference in prices? There sure is. The cheaper stuff most likely varies alot more with reference to thickness, size, and squareness. You also might find somewhere down the road that it's also actually more of a grey color, and has been colorized. For good AB 12x12, I'd expect to pay somewhere between 13-17.00 a foot. That's going to be a helluva bathroom! I did one for a guy on the Atlanta Falcons years ago down in Miami Beach. It was awesome! Even subtle lighting reflected off the stone, making it alot brighter than one would expect with that stone.

Not to hijack this thread, but my question is similar regarding the 12 x 12 vs. a 12 x 24. We are doing some updates to the front of our house - 2 story, built in 1965. Small front porch that has 4' x 32' of original concrete, including a 3 x 8 step up to the front door. (It cannot be taken out, since there is a full "cold room" under it.) Other updates include enlarging the posts, new lighting, new garage doors, etc. Nothing structural. As an overlay on the concrete, we're looking for a slate tile or a porcelain that looks like slate. Since the house is traditional, would it look better to stay with a 12 x 12 tile laid square? Or go to the 12 x 24 laid in a brick pattern? Either way, I plan to have a matching grout. Thanks for any advice!

Nothing is impossible, but it will likely involve compromises. 12' by 12' can either be a dining area or a sitting area, but not both at the same time. If you're going to want to use it for both dining and sitting on a regular basis then you'll end up spending a lot of time shifting furniture. I had a similar sized room that we used predominantly as a sitting area, but would convert to a dining area about once or twice a month. In order to do that I had to create a coffee table that would double as a dining table. I ended up building a 3' by 4' coffee table where the top folded out to a 3' by 8' dining surface. I then built legs that I could adjust from coffee table height to dining table height fairly easily. It would take about two minutes to convert from one to the other. The dining table was not particularly attractive, but nothing a table cloth wouldn't disguise. For chairs, we had two wicker sunroom chairs that are comfortable to sit in and could be used as dining chairs also. We had two smaller, quite light armchairs that could be moved to one side or out of the room altogether. And we would move other chairs from the kitchen to seat the other diners. That set-up worked quite well for us, as it was for occasional dining use and for sitting the rest of the time. It was not our main sitting area, so did not need a sofa or particularly formal furniture. As I say, it involved some compromises. Without making those compromises, as Patricia says, 'the answer is no'.

I scrap in all sizes and they all have their pros and cons. I prefer 8.5 x 11 the most but can get more pictures in a 12 x 12 format. I use that for vacation albums most of the time.

I have always used 12x12 because you can get more pics on a page, but lately I must admit I have been thinking of changing to 8.5x 11. The larger albums are so big and heavy when you get them full...they are really kinda hard to hold and look at. I haven't decided.

I used 8x11 for my kids books but now am thinking about 12x12 because you can fit more pics on a page. Most pics come 4x6 and sometimes you don't want to crop the pic down, so you use 4 pages for one birthday party instead on one. I used to use 3x5 pics but most places only offer 4x6.

I am always thinking of cost and would rather put my money in the book rather than storage/supplies. I would suggest an expando folder for paper. Not sure if you can store 12x12 though?
