Do your scrapbooks have a theme? Help!

I started scrapbooking for my dh 3 years ago then stopped because I didn't have time and now that she's older I can continue. However, I was going to scrapbook her first year only, then only holidays, but the first year is too much stuff. So I'm starting over and doing a small book on her first few days, a book on holidays and then ??...special occasions? I'm not sure how to do this. This way I'm always "done" so-to-speak and can just do special occasions. Otherwise it seems like a big task.

Do you do all do this? When do you stop & start your books, are they theme oriented or do you pick and choose what to put in them and keep continuing on?

My boys are both into Soccer, so I am putting together scrapbooks of their "Soccer careers". Once these are finished, I want to start a vacation scrapbook. I also have scrapbooks from birth to 18 on my list. humph, when am I going to have time to do this?

You could do one for each year with all occasions included, that way you can work on it once the film is developed and continue feeling "done".

I really don't think there is any right or wrong way to put these together. The recipient will love them any way you do it.

I have a Christmas book, baby books, and family reunion books for each side of the family. I started doing the year book last year. All of this stuff is eventually going to my kids so I'm trying to organize and journal so they'll understand it 50 years from now.

I have a friend who only does the baby books and year books. She does a few pages for each month and that's it. She also keeps a monthly calendar of events and sticks that in there. I may try that starting next year.

I've been giving this subject some thot lately as I'm planning my new garden. Right now I have a small herb garden near the patio, an unfinished shade garden, a bird garden with feeder, birdbath, and perennials I allow to go to seed, an overgrown rockery that started as a (mostly) dry garden, and I had a wildflower garden but many in the mix were annual and didn't come back so I've added other plants. I love the idea of a lamb garden as we used to raise sheep. Have to give that more thot - it could have a lot of lamb's ears in it! Maybe it could also have mostly white with some black flowers as we had both colors of sheep. I have a cute terracotta lamb to put there. Thanks for that idea Mickie! As much as I like the idea of theme gardens I also want continuity so right now I'm planning meandering paths which I'll edge with (probably) alyssum leading to each area. I will have a labyrinth and am planning a bed encircling it, but not sure what to plant there. Something not too tall, perennial, and that doesn't attract bees. The bees can stay in the rest of my garden but I don't want to think about them when walking the labyrinth! I'm definitely doing a wildflower area, continue to improve my shade garden which will probably also have the fairy garden in it under the trees (last year my fairy garden was in a vintage tin bathtub), and an area with drought tolerant plants (furthest from the house and source of water). I'll continue to have herbs near the patio (and kitchen) and increase this, maybe add some decorative veggies such as rainbow swiss chard, mesclun mix, scarlet runners, and edible flowers such as pansies and nasturtiums. Might even move my rhubarb there. Many of the perennials I have in the mixed borders are herbals from centuries ago so I could include them (yarrow, Lady's Mantle, rue, feverfew, mallow) and call it a Healing Garden. I recently found a pic of a slope with many types and colors of alpine flowers and thyme which was lovely and I'd love to do that on our back slope. Link below - if you click on the second pic it will enlarge. One theme I'm seriously planning is "deer-resistant borders" around the entire garden perimeter. Hoping it will help keep them out of the fenced house yard if they smell plants they don't like on the perimeter. At least I'll keep the plants they like best closest to the house where I can chase them away. So my theme gardens might be: ~ No-deer ~ Labyrinth ~ Shade/fairy ~ Bird friendly ~ Desert/xeriscaping ~ Wildflower ~ Pretty healing garden ~ Alpine/Thyme/Rock garden Thanks for this thread, it's helping with my planning! See below Ok I have plenty of them still out there "under 15" of snow" I would send them for postage if you like. I like the flat rate boxes. You choose the size of box and then come spring send me a note and postage for that size box and I will fill it for you as full as I can. Amy, Not quite sure what you mean by this question. You don't have to pay ANYONE on this site for information on how to make or get started in scrapbooking, and if someone is suggesting you do please notify me immediately, as this is a free user site. Also this site doesn't sell supplies, and no one is supposed to use this site to sell their items to you, so you don't have to pay anyone here anything. If you want to start scrapping you have to buy your supplies yourself, at which ever store you normally shop at, or the closest scrapbook store to you, and if you are worried about the cost you can start small and get a few supplies at a time. Hi, I see that it's been a little while since you posted this, but I wanted to share the info I have in case you still need it. I discovered Creative Memories Digital Scrapping software around 6 months ago and haven't looked back. I packed up all my traditional stuff, (and I had lots and lots of it...) and I'm now trying to decide who to give it to. Creative Memories is great, I had tried scrapping with Adobe Photoshop Elements since I already used it to manipulate my photos, but I could never get the hang of it, (I've since discovered that many other people say the same thing, you have to have a good working knowledge of it to scrap with it.) CM does all the major things that PSE does, you can lasso an area and turn a photo into sepia or b/w while leaving that one spot in color just for one example. There are bunches of free paper collections that you can download, along with a free version of the scrapping software, Storybook Creator. The free version is very limited in what it will do though, you can basically only use it to drag and drop photos into all the pre-designed pages available. It's not terribly expensive, and if you buy the beginners collection you get a 39.95 coupon toward a storybook, (an 8x8 is around 40.00.) With it you also get a large kit of paper/embellishments/overlays, (which you can fill with color, gradients, paper, etc.)/and word art. You can do things like change the look of a piece of paper or embellishment simply by changing the hue or color of it. You can change it to match your photos or just to get several different looks from the same paper or embellishment. CM collections that are available to purchase, (in addition to the free ones) are very inexpensive. They range from 3.95 to 9.95 for a very large collection. There are also freebies added daily to my website that you can download, or you can use products that are not CM although I rarely need to because they have so much to choose from. I know some people like to use the freebies you find online though and most of those are compatible with it. I was so impressed with the company that I signed up as a consultant a few weeks ago and I'm loving it. I have a Facebook group called Tamela's Scrapbooking Divas where you can check out some of my work along with a few other people who have posted there. The software is extrememly user friendly and what I do is teach people how to use it, in addition to the free web claasses that CM offers covering beginning to advanced techniques. Mine don't have themes and my friends think I'm nuts. But to me (a right-brained CPA), it makes perfect sense...what I've done. I have 4 sm. children. I have five "series" of albums in process, all chronological. I have the series for me and DH. I don't tend to do anything really creative in them. Then I have a series for each child from birth (or just before birth in Mommy's tummy!). Those I've been more creative with. That way, when DH and I are no longer around, no one is fighting to split the family pictures. I'll get 5 copies of the same picture made if it's one I really like. The elder members of my family are all gone and all I ever wanted was the pictures. Sadly, I didn't get any.

Plus, my children are the most over-photographed children around. I've had a camera shoved in their faces since birth! They love seeing their pictures. If I did a separate album for every event, trip, or whatever, I'd have way too many albums. This way seems more manageable. It's much easier for me to keep up. Just my $.02!

Mom, that sounds like a good idea - that way someday everyone gets a picture. My MIL has few pictures of of DH as a baby because a lot of their things were destroyed in a flood. Thankfully when grandma passed away many of those lost pictures (at least portraits) came back, so now I have some to compare to our son's. I have three books in progress right now - our wedding album (I'm up to halfway through the honeymoon), a baby book for my son and a family history album with old photos and genealogy information. None of which I get much time to work on lately! LOL

I have an album for each year, and create themed pages around what the pics are I happen to have for the year. I dont have any kids so they're all family, friends and pets pics. So if my pics are from easter, I create easter themed pages, etc. If I just have goofing off, non-themed pics, I just find cute papers, embellishments to match.
