Oval Cutter Help

I have a fiskar cutter that won't stay locked.

I start the cut and then it keeps getting smaller in size.

Any tricks to keeping this fixed or do I need a new one?

I use a cutting board, maybe I need their templates instead?

gagama: I had a fiskars circle cutter and could never get it to work right. I just returned it to Target. I really like the cutting system from CM (Cre@tive Memories). Easy to use and never a mistake. I am going to try others though to use with shape sizes that CM doesn't have. I have seen Colozzule (?sp) which has about 5 sizes for each shape and that would be great when matting pictures with several different colors. Good Luck

Are you talking about the round one with the "spring" in the middle, where you lower the blade as needed? I used one that belonged to a friend of mine and didn't care for it. It's the one that follows a cutting template and works kind of like a Spyrograph (remember those?!) I was pretty disappointed. I've been looking for something that can cut ovals and circles cleanly. Any other suggestions? I"ll look up the CM cutter you mentioned.

I don't have the CM oval cutter, but I've used it and I must say that I hate it. I wasn't comfortable with it AT ALL. My CMC told me that it took her many tries before she became comfortable with it too. I've never tried any other kind - I still just use templates and cut them out by hand. To me, it's easier than trying to fiddle with that awkward contraption CM came out with. Ok, here's what I don't like about it - I find that it's not a smooth "swing" around the arcs, it leaves sort of a lip around the edge of the picture, and it often leaves a little "hangnail" (for lack of a better word) where you meet up at the end with where you began. I wish they had figured otu a way to make an oval cutter just like their OLD circle cutter - I loved that thing!

CM oval cutter - yuck yuck yuck!! personally, I don't like it. I find it awkward to use, leaves a lip around the edge of the picture, and limits the sizes of the ovals. I'd love to see one made exactly like the old cm circle cutter - the arm that swings around the blade (does that make sense?). I just didn't like it but I'm told it takes a lot of getting used to.

Yea, the counters aren't in bad shape at all. Except there's some water damage around that wood trim. Which is also the part I hate the most. That trim! And with wanting to paint the cabs white, I can't leave that and I don't like the look of that part painted, either. You know how you walk in the room, and something just stands out and as eye sore, making you not like the entire room. That's what these counters do for me. I really wouldn't mind the kitchen at all, if it weren't for those. Heck..I'd probably not even paint the cabs, (a whole other fear there). But, the green with the red paint kills me. If we don't get them done in the next six months, we're painting the kitchen again. Just to get rid of the red and green. It's funny, one of the reasons we bought this house a yr ago over some of the others, was because of the counters. I was so sick of seeing the same granite everywhere, this was a nice change. I think if I could go to a granite yard, pick out a beautiful slab I'd consider doing granite. But, I'm really just tired of seeing it in every single house I go to. High end homes, to middle of the road ones like mine. I have no choice but to do something cheaper, from a box store. And I just can't see doing the thin, little granite slabs all the builders and flippers do around here.

Oval-leafed milkweed -- I think they're a goner. Help please.

I had terrible results with most of my milkweed seedlings from a variety of species because so many things were intent on killing them. Milkweed beetle larvae and adults would strip the stems of all leaves. Something, maybe beetles, would eat the roots. Monarchs would constantly lay eggs on seedlings and caterpillars would move to them from other plants. Some kind of white-yellow fuzzy moth caterpillar (not tussock)... Tussock moth caterpillars would migrate to them. Raccoons would dig them up. Voles would dig holes and tunnels. Chipmunks. Rabbits would snip the plants at the base of their stem, leaving all the foliage. Oleander aphids. I even had what I think was a crayfish in one spot, making a hole by my garage. I planted oval leaf milkweed and have two seedlings that are barely surviving. One of the two was never really eaten down to the stem but it is being overwhelmed by McKana columbine leaves and seems to be in too-wet a spot. It seemed to be doing okay but something broke the main stem. The other plant was eaten down to nothing but came back. It is struggling to grow although it's in a drier and sunnier spot with less competition. I doubt it will come back. I am very close to just planting common milkweed and swamp milkweed because they seem to be easy, although rabbits have killed a few first-year common plants this year. I'm especially disappointed with my purple milkweed plants. They were doing so well and then — boom — monarchs! aphids! beetles! — oh my! Suddenly I had a lot of small plants that had turned yellow and dropped their leaves. Sullivant's is also weird. It seems to be thriving then you look the next time and every leaf is completely withered.

I second the CM cutting system...it's GREAT!!!!!!!! Nothing beats it, and it's so easy.

How much do these cost? I'm really hesitant about going through a representative - it reminds me of other unnamed popular consultant-based organizations and you inevitably get talked into buying more! Can I find something simliar more cheaply, without having to order it?

Thank you for all the info. I purchased the Creative Memories Cutting System with oval today. I haven't used it but I'll start in this weekend. I found a consultant on the Creative Memories website for my area. Very nice woman and helpful. The cost was $38.00 plus tax. She left me a catalog for other interests I might have. She asked if I was interested in classes, etc. and at this time I'm not. She was fine with that. Good experience. Can't wait to try my new tools.

Check out eBay Phyllis...there are alot of them listed on there, and sometimes you can get them cheaper than through a rep.

$38 isn't bad, especially if the product does what it says it does! I was expecting it to be outrageous or something. I suppose I could justify that to myself since I"ve been driving all over the place looking for something similar and not quite finding what I wanted. I looked on Ebay but I wasn't really sure what I was looking for, I will try again. Thanks!

Here is another plug for the CM cutting system. I love them! If you check out other popular scrapping sites, CM circle/oval cutters get rave reviews. I had no luck w/ the Fiskars Oval cutter either.

If you have all 3 CM blades (red, blue, green) you should be able to mat your pics easily. Enjoy!
