where do I start?

I'm thinking of doing a scrapbook of my GD,who is 4,but don't know the first thing about how to get started.

Are there certain things that I need to purchase immediately?If that is the case,what items do I need to start with.I have a Michaels store close by,but it looks intimidating when I look at all the materials available.

I'd appreciate any and all suggestions....Eliza ann

You can do this a couple of ways. You can find a CM consultant that can help you with your need list and how to do it. You can also go to Michael's and buy a book on beginning scrapbooking. There are several really good ones on the market. There are also books out there especially for scrapbooking kids pages. Go to your local book store as well and look through their selection. You will get some great ideas from them. There are definately some do's and dont's.

There are also some great websites that provide layouts on line. Go to Google and type in Scrapbooking. You will be amazed at what you will find. I am in Michigan and I found a channel on cable called Do It Yourself (DIY) and they have a scrapbooking program that I have gotten great ideas from. Better yet, login to DIY.com and click on crafts/scrapbooking and they will show what was covered in all the shows they have had as well as all kinds of helpful suggestions. There are also scrapbooking magazines that will give you great ideas and a listing of websites to check out.

You can purchase expensive supplies, but you can also get by with less expensive items. Stickers and stamps are great ways to add meaning and decoration to your pages.

I started scrapbooking in October. I went to a CM party about 6 months earlier and bought the medium starter kit. Several of my friends had been trying to get me into this for several years. I resisted because I didn't have any spare time at that time and I thought that you needed to be creative to do it. I finally gave in and went to a weekend cropping party. What a great time I had and I found out that you don't have to be creative. There is so much out there to help you design your pages. I am totally obsessed with it now.
Your granddaughter will treasure the album you make for her and you will too. Good luck and keep me posted on what you find.

The first thing you need to do is organize your photos into years, subjects etc. Then come and visit me! There are so many tips and techniques that will make your pictures stand out. Warning though it is addicting.

First, do a review of the grading and drainage. Will grade adjustment be needed for the patio and planting areas? Is there a proper slope away from the house foundation? Account for every drop of rain that will fall on the property and a down slope in grade along a route to where it can exit the lot. Also search for anywhere water is coming onto your lot from adjoining property and account for it too. Will any new hardscape block the surface flow of water? Do a plan showing any needed changes. Second, plan for any possibly wanted future extensions of utilities; water, electric, and gas. A pond/water feature? Outdoor kitchen? Pergola with lights? Get the idea? Find where the utilities would exit the house and bury plastic pipes from the house to any and all likely places the utilities might be wanted. Later, the utilities can be run through the pipes without digging up the entire route to where wanted. Pay especial attention to this under hardscaping. Third, start construction with any rough grading needed and install any underground piping/drainage. Fourth, Begin hardscape installation taking care not to block access to a far part of the project where possible. Like doing some floor projects, you work back toward a door. Complete the final grading allowing for sod and special soil mixes for planting areas. Fifth, I prefer doing plant areas next if they include trees or large plants that need equipment to get them set. Finish with lawn and small plants.

I would get myself over to Yelp, and research local flooring stores that sell product AND do installation. Read through all the reviews. Get a comfort level that you can work with the folks in the store, and that they stand behind their products and work. Even more important when you're doing the whole house--it's a big project! When things go wrong, and you can read through many, many threads about that, the manufacturer points at the installation, and the installer points at the manufacturer. It is an uphill battle, it can get $$$legal$$$, and when I put flooring in our whole downstairs, I was (rarely for me) less concerned about saving $1/sf than I was concerned about not having anything go wrong, and in the event something did go wrong, having a long-standing store with LEVERAGE over the manufacturer to reduce my risk. I'm glad I went the way I did, and after all my questions, I went with the decades-old family-run store with the great reputation across town. They made great recommendations, and made sure to offer me all my options/upgrades up front, and didn't try to talk me out of anything that was important to me: (e.g. I asked for no quarter round to have a sleeker look of baseboard meeting flooring). Be sure to ask about additional costs for moving furniture, and which crew they will send. In my case, they sent their "best" crew (most experienced), and I agreed to wait for them. They picture-framed our hearth (mitered corners-looks great), and "beefed-up" a stair step that leads to our front door, making it wider/safer--at no extra charge. There are things that a homeowner might not know about (cheap glue?), moisture issues if you're on a slab, etc. These are just my thoughts and experience. You can also read through a lot of threads in this flooring forum to see what goes wrong for folks, and get a better idea of what questions to ask. Good luck!

@LiveWire Thanks. I suspect it was not up to code when it was built. I'm almost sure there was another stairway there at some point in the past, which the previous owner replaced with what's there now. I bought it as a foreclosure, so I don't know exactly what was done when. Would it make sense for me to talk to an architect first? Should I go through a GC? I worry I would spend a bunch of money and then an architect would tell me there's no way to improve it given the amount of space I have. But maybe that's the risk I have to take.

Love the covered verandah! First on the list - get in touch with your local municipality re: permits, building codes, etc. From experience, depending on how close you are/will be to the property line a new property survey may also be required. A licensed General Contractor can manage the carport and basement renos and permitting process but I would strongly recommend working with a Kitchen Designer vs. cabinet maker if your kitchen reno involves changing the layout in any way. You may also want to work with a landscape architect who can provide you with the visuals you're looking for. Good luck!

Heather, you are so right. When I first started, I didn't have my pictures organized and it took me a whole day to sort through my boys soccer pictures before I could even begin to work on layouts. Over the 2003 Christmas break, I pulled out all the boxes of pictures and organized them into subjects and years, so I am all set from this point on. I guess I thought I was the only one who threw their pictures in the photo envelopes into a box!!!
