First time scrapbooker needs help

My son made a blank scrapbook from construction paper bound by finished plywood cover, two rings, leather straps. I want to use it for a memory book using my deseased mother's photos, her poems, and other paper memorabilia. I have bought some acid free protectors, and some acid free paper and acid free adhesive. I am just collecting the things I want to include. But then what do I do? Should I do away with the construction paper and use acid free paper to glue things on? Or can I glue pretty acid free paper over top of the construction paper? Any other hints will be appreciated.

I'm no expert, I'm just starting too...but I think I've read that you should get rid of the construction paper if at all possible. Use some acid-free, lignin-free, archival card stock instead.
