How do we learn?

Hi everyone! NO, I'm NOT "doing" homework, for those of you who were convinced that I waslast school year.

I did however have an assignment to answer this question I posted. We had to relate it to one of the "isms" in class, but I'm skipping that for this!:)

When in class I found some of my fellow students responses interesting, so I figured I'd see what you all have to say too!:) It took me a LONG time to actually come up with a paper, because of the vast possibilities! So, if anyone is interested, "How do we learn??"

I find Harvard's Howard Gardner's explanations interesting. His theory explained me to me better, if that makes sense. He discusses 7 Intelligences, as he calls them. (Others have added to that list.) Spatial, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Mathematical, Kinesthetic, Musical, and Linguistic, if I remember correctly. We usually have more than one of these ways of learning in our make up, but only one or two may be the dominant.

Then there are those of us who only learn the hard way.--my son.

We learn by doing.

For example, when you are a passenger, you rarely remember the entire route well enough to return on your own, but if you do the driving yourself, then you can easily return to that spot.

When DD was a baby, she learned textures by touching and squishing many foods as she ate. It was more than playtime, it was a science experiment in a way. *I* know what a banana feels like when squished, but a baby doesn't, and you have to let them learn somehow.

And there is always the old, tried and true, English teacher method. "You don't know how to spell it? Then go find a dictionary and look it up.."

No matter you didn't know, just by "doing" it, you'll figure it out on your own, and be more likely to commit it to memory.

When I started out gardening, I bought books. A few very interesting and helpful English ones - look for Christopher Lloyd and Vita Sackville-West. I would also recommend Cassandra Danz - learning all that stuff is difficult enough, why not having a bit of fun while at it? Secondly, sit and think. What do you want - as opposed to 'what does everybody else do'. Do you want an ocean of flowers and fragrance, do you want edibles, do you want low maintenance, do you want an evening garden or a morning garden, is *your* time of the year spring or fall... While you're wondering and reading, ammend the soil: compost, mulch and green manure every inch you can see with the unarmed eye. You have all the time in the world, and a year of doing nothing but reading, ammending the soil and thinking will get you *your dream garden* actually earlier than stuffing some plants into some earth and wondering why they die instantly. The fora at the gardenweb are an incredible source of know-how and compassion - you can find out a lot about almost everything, and sometimes all the questions that you might have are already discussed in depth and your growing zone. Lastly a plea: since you have to learn a lot anyhow, learn the correct things: plants have botanical names, and these are the correct names. Do not, please, neverever, use common names - because common names are neither common nor correct... finding out about the needs of a special plant if all you know is some name that nobody else ever heard is a time consuming and frustrating way to kill a plant. Besides that, botanical names are world-wide and language-independent - so you can read about gardens all over the world and know what plants they are talking about :) Good luck!

All of these responses are great, and I think what you need to take away from this is that there's no *one* process, everyone works differently. As someone who does this kind of professionally, I can tell you that not even trained designers work exactly the same way. Two things to remember....1) there are no hard and fast rules (or, there's an exception to every rule); 2) a good house is never done -- seriously. Also, as many of the others posters said, it's usually easier to start small rather than try to do it all at once. That being said, this is how I work....when I meet a new client, I ask TONS of questions. Like: -What do you like -- not only in terms if the room, but in life in general? I always look at the whole house, even if I'm just doing the bathroom, because you can't judge on the basis of one room. - How do you use the room now? How do you want to use the room? - What needs to stay in the room, and what would you like to disappear? - what colors do you like or hate. - What do other members of the family think about the room (esp DH)? _ Are there any special concerns (allergies, physical issues, etc) or special needs (like the bedroom also has to have the home office, for example)? -What time of day do you normally use the room? How many people are usually in it? (and there are a lot more, but you get the idea) Then I measure *everything*, make note of outlets & fixtures, and take pictures of *everything*. Then I start my floorplan and gather ideas for the large furniture pieces. Every job is different for me because every client is different. Some say right from the get-go "I like a cottage look", and others have no idea except that they don't want blue. For some I can start with an existing piece (carpet or artwork) and for others I start with traffic pattern and room use. Last thing I'll say is talk to everyone -- especially here! There are a wealth of talented, creative people on this forum, and I have yet to be disappointed when I've needed input from these folks. Hth, and good luck! Leigh

Here's a good one for you all: My FSD's BM took a job offer in New Mexico. (FSD is 13 y/o.) Well, as previously mentioned, BF basically gave up all rights to have any say-so as to where his DD lives when he signed divorce papers he didn't even read and gave BM Sole Managing Conservatorship. So, before FSD moved, BF was talking with her and it came up that he should probably have new custody papers drawn up to make sure BM flies FSD home once a month (as BM said she would do). BM has a tendancy to say whatever she has to to make a situation non-confrontational at the time and then do whatever she wants anyway (by not answering calls or e-mails until it's too late or something of that sort). So, anyway, FSD screams out "No! I don't want t be like (my DS name)!" First of all, I've only been to court 3 times with my DS's BD. The first was for the divorce hearing, the second for enforcement (both within 6 months of eachother and like almost 6 years ago) and teh third because the AG of Texas wanted to adjust CS. None of which has ever involved BF or FSD and hasn't changed any custody or visitation. Secondly, how would she know any of this if we hadn't even told my DS? Obviously BF has told her. I was so angry with BF that he would discuss any of this with a minor child who has absolutely nothing to do with the situation. So what did she tell her BM? Even worse, what did she tell my DS? That's what I was worried about. BD and I decided that, since none of the court appearances changed anything, we didn't need to talk to our son about them. What if FSD told him some skewed version of what she heard? He would've been upset. Thankfully, she didn't talk to DS about it. But BD and I talked to him so that, just in case she did, he would hear the truth first.

Management by procrastination has worked well for me for years. :) I can't tell you how many "problems" solve themselves while I do other things... That may be more related to the fact I can tend to be a worrier too though. So I'll be worrying about something and think I should "fix" it, but then it just fixes itself.

Sheliajoyce, I find Gardner's theory interesting too. I used him for a paper I did last semester upon my professors insistance! (It was HIS book!) I believe that learning styles are important, and not enough educators consider the individuality of their students. How about Dewey? Has anyone heard of bell hooks, or Nel Noddings? I'm reading bell hooks now for a paper and her theme (so far) seems to focus on love and freedom through education, and community, making learning exciting. It's very good stuff!:)

My friend Flowergirl, learning comes through atleast 6 senses, taste, touch, smell, sight, hearing, reasoning, and common sense. Conscience is the one we need to really be sensitive. Right?
