When does your school start?

School starts for my kids on August 29. I'm curious - when do your kids start back this Fall? Here in my community, each district has a different date, with some schools starting as early as the 14th.

Here in NE Arkansas, many of the schools start this coming Monday, Aug. 19.

I've got two this year, 4th and K. They start this coming Monday, the 19th.

Some of the neighboring counties here in middle TN started this week. We also have some schools in our district on a year round schedule (they call it "non-traditional"), they started the last week of July.

I live in Central Florida 40 miles from Tampa and 60 miles from Orlando on the I 4 corridor. My bloom season can start as early as March or as late as the end of April as it did this year. One year I had blooms in Feb on Valentines Day. If the temps get back down to normal range temps I can say that blooms will start popping up by the end of March with the scapes appearing and then the blooms themselves will be in towards the end of April or the begining of May. As I write these words tonight, I have a scape that is up about 8-9 inches on EYE CATCHING. I will let it grow on and if bad weather is threatening, I will protect it.

John, As to that greenhouse height. Here is a suggestion. Build up a 1 foot high foundation of concrete blocks to hold the greenhouse frame above the ground. On the inside, go down a few more inches and put in a brick floor with sand as a filler between the bricks. I electrified mine with a single 4 foot outdoor type flourescent fixture with two 4 foot bulbs, as well as weather proof outlets. The wiring was done with PVC tubing used for electric outdoors. The wiring also as a GPF in the circuit to protect against grounding problems. In summer, I have fans running as well as leaving the door open. Mine also has an oil filled piston that will open the center roof panel to allow air to flow out too. Building the greenhouse up on blocks a foot high, and with a deeper floor inside, you can increase the inside height by about a foot . I also have a 6 foot long wooden bench inside that is narrow enough to get through the 2 foot opening of the door. Not only that, the greenhouses usually have aluminium channels that are the framework and these usually have slots for specially made screws that push into the slots and lock in place. Then, I place the shelf brackets they use for closets, and put a foot wide 6 foot long board on the opposite side of the bench. Mine can hold about 20 of the 18"x24" plastic plant trays. The best answer probably is, "because it's illegal and I could get in trouble". If your state is like mine, kids have to be 13 to be left home alone. Of course, even at 13, it's not a really good idea on a regular basis. Unfortunately, teens without adequate supervision usually find a way to get into some sort of trouble sooner or later. And the homes where kids stay home unsupervised--at least in my neighborhood--seem to turn into the hangouts. I know a couple of mom's who would be very upset and disappointed if they knew exactly what was going on when their children were home alone. And I'm not talking about horrible kids. Even good ones at that age, don't have the sense to always do the right thing. I've actually seen a lot of women giving up their jobs (or rearranging their hours) so they're home during the hours when their teens are home. In some ways, parental supervision is even more vital when they're beginning to flex their wings, and learning to make decisions. Especially considering that teens brains aren't fully mature. Until they reach their mid-20's, they don't usually have the ability to make logical, well-thought out decisions--that's a medical fact. Teens are working on pure emotion--and you know how much trouble that can get one into You're definitely doing the right thing by seeing that she doesn't have too much time on her own, unsupervised. Even though she may complain now, you're the parent, and making sure she stays safe and healthy now will pay off in the longrun.

Ahh. Back to school. With only one of four left in HS, Back-to-School is dwindling. It is so much simpler now. There is only one child in one sport. And only one to track along on their school work. We will have time to deal with our overdue HOUZZ projects now that summer R&R is over. So let me weigh in on the controversial mamby-pamby comment. Hate to see name calling. It's negative and unnecessary. As for patience with the new traffic patterns, this is to the parents who take their children to their bus stops and feel compelled to chat with the bus driver. Please DON'T. It is really inconsiderate. The bus drivers are at work. They don't have time for social hour. It may brighten your day to "brighten their day" but it is not the time nor the place to "make a difference in the bus drivers' lives". I have been part of huge lines where the same parents do it daily. All the cars that are stuck behind the bus (and lawfully NOT passing the school bus) actually have somewhere to go. They sure do. Maybe it is an appointment. Or maybe, just maybe, they are trying to get to their job. Keep that in mind. Fortunately it is a small number of parents who want to chat it up. Unfortunately it has a big impact.

I am in NW Washington and my kids don't start until September 5--and they didn't finish school until June 19! We have fabulous weather in August though, so I am glad they have the whole month off.

I start September 30th. Kids in Washington (hi sadiesmom!) always start the day after labor day. I don't understand why the west coast always starts and ends later than the east coast.

This year there is a new state law in Wisconsin that requires the first day of school to be after Labor Day so that the high school kids can remain employed in the tourism industry through the holiday weekend!

My daughter is on year round and she started 1st grade in July.She only had the weekend as break in between kindergarden and the 1st grade.
Actually Friday August 23 was her last day.Now today is her 1st day on vacation until the end of October.

Our kids start on the 3rd of September, right after Labor day. They usually get out around the 2nd or 3rd week in June. Of course that depends on how many snow days we have. I think the children have to go 178 days of school here in our town. NancyLouise
